An interview with Reitman about Afterlife with very little discussion about the film but at one point he does dodge a plot point question by confirming the fourth film is at the least being plotted out and the dodge suggests that we'll see some call backs to show what happened to the original team in the 1990's

Ghostbusters Announces Afterlife Sequel Comic Book
A limited run comic series is going to be released which charts the events following on from Ghostbusters: Afterlife and will act as a link to Ghostbusters IV

Additionally, Reitman confirmed that Ghostbusters IV will be set in New York and will focus around the Firehouse, with Firehouse being the films project title like Afterlife was project titled Rust City

No other plot details were given away but it was referred to as the next chapter in the Spengler family story suggesting the central new cast will be returning.

Bloody hell, so that means it's already in production?

Presumably it's not far off. I suppose it will depend on how much location shooting is done versus set. I know the HQ in Afterlife was a set reconstruction so they could start filming behind closed doors easily for many scenes like they did when Afterlife popped up out of nowhere. With this one being set in New York we'll presumably find out more soon but given they're gunning for an Xmas release I'm hoping we get a full on snowed city style entry.

Kenan to Helm "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" Sequel - Dark Horizons
Gil Kenan, the co-writer of Afterlife and GB4 as well as Monster House, will be taking over directing duties of Ghostbusters IV. It's been confirmed that the film will see the cast of Afterlife return including Paul Rudd as the events of the film relocate from Summerville to the Firehouse HQ in New York.

Filming begins in two weeks time on Ghostbusters IV here in the UK. Ahead of that the Ecto-1 has just been shipped in for pre-production and the Afterlife model being wheeled in suggests that the new film won't be that far disconnected from the events of the prior film considering the cars condition.
