Episode 72 - M-Corp
As Lister turns 50, Red Dwarf receives a very belated software update that reveals the JMC were bought out by M-Corp - the largest corporation in the solar system. The update adds a perception filter so that Lister can't see the others as they are not M-Corp employees. Additionally, he can't see any object not owned or created by M-Corp. Unable to see his cohorts, his belongings or even his guitar, Lister is faced with an isolation greater than the one he has already known for half of his life. Reviews were strong for this episode, slightly less so from fans.
Worth every corporately owned penny?

Loved the end section as well. A fantastic throwback to the original show.

Episode 73 - Skipper
Kryten devises a new machine called a Quantum Skipper, allowing the crew to leap between dimensions. Rimmer steals the device and jumps to new dimensions in search of one where he isn't considered to be a loser. The episode is notable for featuring recreations of the set from Red Dwarf I and Red Dwarf II as well as being the first and most recent appearance of Holly and Captain Hollister since Red Dwarf VIII, 18 years before. The episode was the best reviewed and received of the non-BBC era, closing out Series XII on a high just before the shows 30th Anniversary.
In the end, was Red Dwarf XII the show fully back up to full strength?

Can't believe how many episodes I've not seen!
I watched the last couple of S1 episodes with my son last night - "Confidence & Paranoia" and "Me2".
Nice to hear him chuckling at the various jokes. Had to explain a couple, but we're both looking forward to trying a bowl of piping-hot gazpacho soup.

We finally reach the end of the journey for now...
Episode 74 - The Promised Land
Red Dwarf XIII reverted back to the feature length format of RDIX but aired it in one go. Lister explores unexplored corners of Red Dwarf and discovers the original start up disc for Holly, with the ship AI restored to Day 01 settings Holly realises the ship is lost in the depths of space and sets it on a course to self-destroy. The others escape in Starbuck and cross paths with the long lost Cat race. A battle of God Figures begins that will see Rimmer face a moment of choice over whether to be the true hero, Kryten lay his life on the line and the future of the Cat race decided. The episode was a hit for the channel once again with reviews spread across being strong and also being on the weaker side due to the extended format.
After the last few series or even compared to the older ones, was this the stuff of Promise?
What future would you like to see for Red Dwarf?

I've watched RDXIII twice now, the first time I really struggled with it. Second time was a lot better and it has some good stuff in it but it was a step down again from the prior three series. Naylor just can't leave the filming style alone and the feature length/multi-part format is still a big detractor from the show. The idea that it would just be those moving forward weathered my appetite a lot, I think it's why I'm fairly open to Grant and Bye returning with a more aggressive approach to the show. It needs to be a series and it needs to stop taking such huge gaps.
