Love the Coopers had a couple of briefly poignant moments, but was mostly your typical Chrimbex guff, with a totally chaotic, unconnected range of narratives kept just about watchable by an incredible ensemble cast.
Yoshiki: Under the Sky is a concert film that I saw, followed by a live Q&A. I love a lot of Yoshiki's work, but this is not the best showcase of that, and the film feels like a totally misjudged (is there another kind?) vanity project. Bonus points for my boy Jamie showing up in the crowd-sourced "fans sing Endless Rain" montage bit, mind.
Parallel Mothers was disappearing off Mubi so I had a race against time to watch it before midnight last night; it looks great, is well acted, and the melodrama simmers nicely without needing to escalate continually. Actually quite like that the two narratives aren't pushed closer together, and that they're just independently good.

Wonka
This is a strange beast. Being from the guy who made the Paddington films it shares its soft edge yet somewhat sets itself up as a prequel to the 70's version. Due to that the overt weirdness of the Burton version is gone but also so is the darker undertones of the 70's version too. Timothy is largely likeable even though the role borders on the edge of not being pulled off, he never comes within the remotest touching distance of Wilder though. It's a very 'mid' family film but nothing is actively bad about it.
Wish
I kind of figured that despite the weak reviews a lot of the struggle was trailers holding stuff back having heard about a huge amount of cameo's and nods etc. That's not the case though. The film is incredibly flat and not helped at all by the art style that I appreciate the dice roll of but it doesn't pay off, coming across as very visually dull throughout. The central premise is okay but the film is incredibly unambitious and so whilst another simple and easy watch you'll forget it quickly.

Godzilla minus one
Belive the hype this is a seriously good Godzilla film. It’s right up there with the original and Shin. You care about the people in it and it makes the violence of the big G seem more horrific. The design of Godzilla is closer to that of the Monsterverse incarnation but this one is an unthinking machine. The dead eyes and lack of expression make it terrifying.
And when that classic score kicks in…

Violent Night The real Santa gets trapped in a Die Hard style siege with a bunch of terrorists holding a family hostage on a big family estate. it sounds like a great set up but it kind of falls flat as none of the cast bar David Harbour are worth rooting for. It's not without its redeeming bits the kid's home alone style traps bit is hilariously gory, as are a lot of the terrorists deaths the body count in this is pretty high too and it improves in the second half when Harbour suddenly turns from bumbling Santa to killing machine. Ultimately It's just not quite good enough to be added to the crimbo rotation, id stick to Die Hard.

The Equaliser 3 - Denzel can still look suitably menacing at 68 (or a year or two younger depending on when it was filmed). Cleverly choreography and shot positioning throughout so we never think that Denzel cannot do all of the cool stuff happening. Washington can almost phone it in and he will dominate the screen, thankfully here he doesn't phone it in though the plot is relatively generic (with a little depth). Like the tie in with Dakota's character, if they were aiming for a follow on with her they should have fleshed her out a bit more though as I cannot see her (at the moment) as a suitable replacement in terms of action/fighting etc. Overall I enjoyed it a lot more than 2. Would I see Dakota in a follow up - yeah might be cool.

Surprised myself last night rather enjoying Our Ladies (2019) on Film4.
A sort of Scottish Catholic schoolgirl "Inbetweeners" movie but less funny, less likeable and less well drawn characters, often misandrist and a soft centre despite its general sex obsessed, warts and all crudity. But it is still a well observed depiction of friends' changing group dynamics and a believable, if exaggerated, snapshot of teenage life anyone could relate to if you've been a teenager of any gender in the last fifty years.
