Friday the 13th: Part VIII - Jason Takes Manhattan
Night Twenty Three - A shame in a way because the tagline is so much more fun a concept than the actual film proves to be

Isn't that the one where someone tries to fight him on top of a building and he uppercuts his head not just clean off his shoulders, but off the side of building, and into a bin? I would have spoiler tagged that, but it's important information that I feel the people need to know.

Were you expecting it to be more like Debbie Does Dallas?!

fuse, yeah. That's the one. Boxer is punching Jason for about 14 minutes straight, then exhausted says "take your best shot" and has his head punched clean off.
It's hilarious and memorable, but ties in with what I said earlier that I think the super indestructible zombie Jason loses any sense of tension. It's more when rather than if the redshirts meet their end.

I think my other fave kills is Bacon getting smoked and when the guy gets out of Crystal Lake and Jason's lurking under the jetty, impales his nuts on a harpoon, raises him aloft to silhouette him on the moon, then pulls the trigger.

Neon, you'll have to give us your top 5 kills when you've lurched your way through the whole series. You sicko.

Jason X, sleeping bags. Might be the loudest I have ever laughed in a cinema.

Manhattan is my fave one, for the longest time as a teen it was the only one i had on VHS and the Darkest side of the Night song is badass.

I went to the cinema last night to see Smile 2 and really enjoyed it.
I'd seen the original for the first time earlier in the week, so it was fresh in my mind and I'd say I probably prefer the sequel.

I felt the original was great but borrowed from The Ring and It Follows a lot. whereas the sequel feels more its own thing, only really reminding me of the previous film (obviously) and The Substance, but only from the starlet angle.

The lead character being really famous was an interesting spin rather than someone who finds it easy to be alone or fade into a crowd.

I jumped like a mofo throughout and thought it had a great ending that had us puzzling what was and wasn't real.

Basically, if you liked the original, you'll probably like the sequel too.

I'll watch out for the Smile films ... will try and watch the first this month, assuming it's streaming somehwere.

I was in the mood for some John Carpenter last night and watched the brilliant Assault on Precinct 13. Generally considered JC's Rio Bravo/Night of the Living Dead mash-up but actually it's got its own magic blend ... of course it has, it's John Carpenter. Based on a closing-down police station, out in the boonies and under siege by a deadly street gang. Soundtrack is typically great, I love the chilled out jazzy keyboard theme during quieter moments. The script is full of zingers ... including every single line delivered by Darwin Joston (in the only film I've ever seen him in, so he IS and always will be the character to me), convict anti-hero Napoleon Wilson, one of the coolest movie characters ever.

Atticus Smile is on Netflix and currently on All4.
I recorded it to skip the adverts, but you can stream it for free if you can cope with the creeping dread being interrupted by the Tesco Woosh adverts?

                        I still love AoP13. What a banger.
When the theme started, did you shout "Ah AH AH YEAH! It's a MEGABLAST!" ?

Ice cream truck scene is still shocking.

That final sequence where it's all-or-nothing is similar to a zombie film where the faceless attacks throw everything at them.

I love Carpenter's work, he says wearing his "Carpenter VHS stack" t-shirt...

                          Venom: The Last Dance
Like many sequels, your mileage will vary depending on what you thought of the previous films. For me the first is a fairly solid film with some fun moments, the sequel is a weaker film that still has a couple of fun moments. Whilst the franchise is broadly middle of the road, the third film perhaps rests heavier on Eddie and Venom's banter and I feel is stronger for it. It's one for those who already like this stuff but I enjoyed it.

                          Speak No Evil
It's a well observed film, I've never been hunted but the awkward social dynamics still ring true enough to make the slow burn effective. The last 15 minutes just about hold together enough without spoiling things and you're riding out some character stupidity but solid overall.

Friday the 13th: Part IX - Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
Yep, immensely poorly judged sequel and definitely one of the worst entries.

                            Salem's Lot
Night twenty six - The new version that aims to use It's aesthetic for likeability and it works to an extent but that tone wasn't really made with this Fright Night alike story in mind so it's not effective from a scares POV

It’s the Freddy’s Dead of Jason movies. And is probably from the same era and maybe even the same execs. It’s awful.

I rewatched Alien Romulus last night and enjoyed it even more the second time around. That one thing though…
