    Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
So, this is a competent but largely unremarkable entry. The addition of the Beast Wars characters adds little to nothing to proceedings, they're there in the same way the latter sequels have repeatedly padded out the cast with disposable variants. The plot is a full on rerun of the first film, Dark of the Moon and Last Knight stripped down and merged into one where whilst it's fairly well made you have literally seen everything the film has to offer already. A tease of expanding the franchise into a cinematic universe fails to excite also, We're probably at a point now where a reboot would be better served.

    The Flash
I knew early on that one of the talked about things in this film would end up being the CG, there's a lot of it including CG characters and they look odd. I've already read complaints about it but to be honest, given the context within the film, the majority of it is clearly done for consistencies sake. Better to use it across the board than mix and match.

In a way it's a shame the film took so long to release, in a post-Spider-Verse and No Way Home world the impact of what this film does is lost even though it originally should have pre-dated them. But, putting that and Miller's history aside... it's good. The opening, that CG element aside, absolutely hits the nail on the head for the DCU in a way that no other DCU movie ever has. It's like a preview of what could have been mixing the humour with well done character moments and action. There are a few moments where it slows up too much but overall it's really well done. Keaton's Batman is through and through great and Calle's Supergirl is also very good in the context of the film. One of the better superhero films of the last five years.

Wow! Surprisingly positive review of The Flash there!

Yep, it's undoubtedly going to be dragged down by the factors surrounding Miller and by default from those unwilling to credit entries that don't have the Marvel logo attached to them but it's a solid outing and if the rumours are true of the director helming the DCU Batman are true that should be very good as the Batman stuff here is good

I was probably going to give it a miss, but will try to check it out, cheers.

In and unplanned Morgan Freeman double-bill I watched Unforgiven and Se7en last night.

Not seen Unforgiven in many years and it was a treat to watch with a more gwown up head. It presents as something straight-forward ... a prostitue is attacked and the perps aren't suitably punished, so a reward is raised for their deaths and it draws the would-be assassins, one being a grizzled and reformed Clint who is struggling to make ends meet following the death of his wife ... but there are many subtleties going on. You're constantly being pulled in different directions ... who is right and who is wrong ... who is good and who is evil? It's an absolute belter with well-drawn, complex characters played by proper heavyweights. Softly spoken Clint is perfect among the loudmouths and showboaters, fabricating their legacies while he tries to play down his own. The bookends of the film link together perfectly and leave you in no doubt you've seen something special.

I'd seen Se7en pretty recently but one of my sons asked if I fancied watching it last night and how could I refuse. He was pretty surprised and shocked at some of the places it went. But I noticed some of the beauty this time ... especially the sequence with Detective Somerset rocking the graveyard shift in the library. David Fincher has a real touch for visuals.

Still not seen Unforgiven. Need to check that out.

I really like Se7en but in terms of 'David Fincher serial killer films' (quite a small category granted) it is kinda eclipsed by Zodiac for me, because that's a film I just absolutely adore.

Se7en is on my Bucket List poster, so it's due a rewatch, but I'm not really looking forward to it, in the same way I'm not looking forward to rewatching Old Boy either. They're pretty bleak watches!

There is a Korean pop culture exhibition on at the V&A at the mo which I went to. It's pretty good overall, nothing too mind blowing, but there was a funny thing they had where you could go behind a curtain and watch the hallway fight from Oldboy projected onto the wall. I was standing there on my own watching it and this woman came in and had a look and seemed genuinely appalled. She turned around and looked at me in an almost accusatory fashion as if I was the one clobbering people

Yes, I prefer Zodiac too. Amazing film. Due a rewatch soon for sure.

Yeah, in a way you're desensitised on a rewatch but you know you're heading nowhere pleasant.

                      Extraction
With the sequel releasing we finally got around to watching this and it was... okay? It's very 'turn your brain off'' with hardly any plot at all, the action is reasonable but that's about all

So, spurred on by Neon Meh-gnition's positive review, I went to see this last night and... I really enjoyed it too!

I was genuinely laughing throughout the film, especially the opening scene, which was brilliant.

I'm glad you warned me about the CGI as it's a bit weird, that Uncanny Valley thing where you can just tell something's not right, but again I agree with you that you can dismiss it if you don't want to get hung up about it. I thought Batman's cape whilst on the Batcycle looked worse than in PS4 Arkham Knight, but rolled with it.

There are a couple of moments that aren't massively clear, especially the time-travel bits where they've just said "he runs fast and activates wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey" and there's no point delving into it, like BttF, where the point of the story isn't how time travel works but a vehicle to tell a "what if you met your parents when they were your age?" story. There are some excellent BttF references in this, by the way.

I hope Miller gets the help they've asked for after their conviction, because I thought they were really good in this, playing two very different versions of Barry Allen. I absolutely don't condone their actions and I was torn about seeing this, but I'm pleased they are seeking help.
Like with the "can you separate art from artist?" thread, there are a lot of people involved with this film and wanted to check it out:
Speaking publicly for the first time in nearly two years, Ezra Miller touched on their many controversies at the premiere of "The Flash."

It feels like every review mentions Miller's behaviour, so I don't feel they've been forgiven.

The other multiverse movies have beaten this to the punch, but that doesn't mean it's not fun.
I thought everything was in the trailer, but there's loads more in the final film.
Like No Way Home, it's best to see this before the internet tells you all of them.

So yeah, if you've not burned yourself out on superhero movies, this is definitely worth checking out and I *gulp* agree with Neon Ignition!

My son's Scouts was cancelled at the last minute, so I took him along as a treat and he really enjoyed it too, especially the comedy moments and the deeper implications of time travel, but he was a bit lost with some of the characters and had to whisper to him that there was a Batman film when I was his age and Keaton played him!
It definitely panders to viewers who have followed DC throughout the decades.

I will 100% give them props if they stick with that last reveal in the next DCU Batman movie too

                            Living.

Bill Nighy is an absolute national treasure, and I won’t hear otherwise.

I went and saw Across the Spider-Verse with my partner yesterday. Absolutely mint film. Worth seeing for the visuals alone. I remember liking the first one but I don't remember it being this impressive.

Another vote for Spider-Verse 2 here.
Took my son, who was really keen to see it and we both really enjoyed it.

Okay, so it's not a massive spoiler, but it's part 1 of a 2-part story.

I say that because I think it helps you manage your expectations.
A lot of people who didn't know that (my son included) felt short-changed that it was half a story or the back end was a lot of prep for the next film rather than resolution of this one.
I knew and I wasn't let down, so was able to enjoy seeing how they're setting things up for the next film.

                                Actual Spider-Spoiler chat:

I loved how Miles was such an anomaly in this - he just bucked the trend wherever he went, not settling for "this is just the way things are", even when he felt let down by his family and friends.

In the trailer, we see him running from all the spideys, but given no context and I absolutely LOVED the reason as to why it happened. I was seething at SM 2099 and really cheering Miles on!

Not sure about the treatment of Peter B. Parker. It was a great moment when he returned but felt like his story arc at the end of 1 saw him pulling his life together, but going around in a woman's bathrobe and slippers invalidated his character progression and value to this film, IMHO.

However, this was brilliant fun and I can't wait to see it again.

They could've banged out a lazy CGI cash-in on the Spider-Man name alone, but they've created something that is visually stunning and really brave. There are artistic decisions here that aren't just cool-looking, but serve a purpose for additional storytelling without needing words.

Yeah, if you've got Superhero fatigue, but still want to watch them, give this a try, whilst remembering this is the first half of story!
