Agree with pretty much all of the views on the list ... I missed The Hidden when looking through it (like it was 'hidden' somehow) so that's another one for me ... a school-days VHS rental

My son requested Shutter Island this week ... a film that didn't quite land with me first time around. The concept is good, though overdone, but the execution is poor. The twist is telegraphed a little too clearly so drops with little to no impact. The final moment works but it's no enough to leave anything satisfying. Had some great ingredients but it's a bit of a misfire from Marty I think.

Yeah, definitely one of his most lightweight films. It is telegraphed so blatantly what will happen (in fact, you could probably guess it from the premise if you were so inclined), it leaves it sadly predictable.

-Inception > Interstellar for the Nolan sisters too

Mostly it's the order of things I'm a little off with, common with these things though. I'm amazed how many I've not seen too.
I think the list is decent and only the fact that there's a mere 100 means something had to be omitted so I was surprised at no Mad Max or something I love like The Andromeda Strain or The Quiet Earth. prinnysquad rightly pointed out there's a distinct lack of 50s/60s stuff like Them! or Quatermass and the Pit.

I don't think the order would ever be agreed on from person-to-person though as it's so subjective.

What's your tally though, Neon Ignition?!

Mines down at 55. The missus struggles with sci-fi particularly older stuff but a few of them we've ticked off as we've made it through the 70's movies in the last year or two. We're on 1981 atm so plenty road to catch up to others but I hadn't heard of a handful of them either

I watched Swingers (1996).

This is basically a hangout movie, in the vein of Linklater's Dazed and Confused (or later, Everybody Wants Some!!). I liked it more than the latter and nearly as much as the former, although it's an even simpler affair than those laid back comedies.

The plot, such as it is, follows Jon Favreau, wannabe comedian and recent Los Angeles transplant from the East Coast, as he pines for his ex-girlfriend back home and hangs out with his buds (including Vince Vaughan).

That's really all there is to it. It's a warm, funny, well-observed series of scenes of a few guys in their late twenties drinking together, playing videogames together, and trying to help the awkward Favreau get over his ex. Recommended. A relaxing watch.

My favourite bit of Swingers is:

At one point, the main characters and another group of guys are on the verge of getting into a fight, escalating to the point where a gun is pulled.

When he finally speaks to his friends again, he finds them playing videogames with the people he almost fought/shot.

I firmly believe that almost everyone is potentially a new friend if you get to know them a bit and if they're into videogames, you're even more likely to have something in common!

Yeah, that's a great moment!

I actually feel like I undercooked my impressions, as I think about the film more. It's really funny and has so many great moments in it. Really like it.

Swingers is absolutely class. It was my introduction to Favreau and Vaughn. And Doug Liman. I love it how

Vegas is a massive let down when they eventually get there. And the answer machine awkwardness

Not seen it in years. The two leads reunited in Made but it wasn’t quite on par with Swingers.

Picked up The Hidden on Laserdisc from eBay. That’s me sorted for a movie fix next weekend.

I swear I've seen The Hidden, but can't remember a thing about it. I've not rewatched it loads like They Live.

I watched Punisher: Warzone (2008 via Freevee).
I'd not seen this take on The Punisher and after the untimely death of Ray Stevenson this week, I thought I'd check it out.
It's perfectly watchable with some decent action sequences, but the likes of The Raid and John Wick have reinvented action and gunplay in films. There's a lot of staccato cuts and I think he throws someone and there are about 5 edits.

Not sure on this take of Punisher either. It's gory, yes, but he seems to do stuff that looks cool but isn't remotely tactical.
Exhibit A:

He seems a bit soppy, too, rather than the emotionally dead revenge machine of the comics.

If you want a Punisher Fix, I'd highly recommend the Punisher MAX series that was amazing

The Punisher: Dirty Laundry is a fun short too.

Watched Predator last night. Still amazing.

Escape From New York
I enjoyed it this time, it's been a long time since I last saw this, but... it wasn't as strong as I remembered? There's loads about it I do like but I dunno, I could see how a remake could build on it in some ways (whilst likely being worse in many others)

Dark City is a great film.

Seeing as it's absolutely a competition.... 65

I watched Sisu (2023 via the cinema) and enjoyed it.
Nothing astonishing, but a fun revenge thriller.
I had it described as "WWII John Wick" and I can see the comparison, but it's got that movie version feel of WWII like Inglorious Basterds.

At the end of WWII, the Nazis are retreating and employing a scorched earth policy. When an arrogant battalion of German troops crosses path with an older gold prospector, they don't live long to regret their mistake...

There are flashes of violence, but they're almost cartoonish.
In fact, the whole thing felt like a graphic novel - fun but far-fetched.
Definitely a fun Friday-night flick when it hits streaming.
