I went to see Beau is Afraid last night. I was expecting the unexpected and still got knocked for a six. Three long hours in Beau's frightening, nightmarish world, anxiety cranked to the max. It's dangerous to go outside, it's dangerous inside, home provides no sanctuary, everything is conspiring against you, everyone is out to get you, everyone is watching you, everything you do is judged ... it's intense. But it's also funny. There are so many tragic themes crashing together you can't begin to unpack it while watching. Phoenix is tremendous, carrying this huge behemoth on his back. He's on another level. It's not a film for everyone. But it's not very often you can go see something that's genuinely, completely unlike anything you've seen before. If that's an experience that appeals, go see it.

I watched a couple of films at the weekend that I really liked. The first was Triangle of Sadness. I absolutely loved this movie. It’s a quirky dark satirical comedy about rich people basically. Starts with a couple of models in an early relationship and an imbalance of power and then moves onto a cruise ship for the second act where it really gets going. Lots of humour and commentary about classism and privilege that, while totally overt and often very on the nose, always seems to fit perfectly in the movie rather than jarring with it. It’s a lot of fun while being pretty dark too.
The other film I watched is called Coven of Sisters. It’s a small Argentinian film set in the 1600s about a group of girls in Basque country who get imprisoned by a witchfinder and are interrogated and will inevitably be found guilty. They know the men of the village will be returning soon and, if they can keep the interrogation going long enough, they’ll be saved. So they start bull****ting the interrogators and that’s really what the film is about. It’s low budget and dark but I really enjoyed it.

Piggy (2022 via NowTV)
Spanish film about an overweight teenager that is bullied by her peers until they are kidnapped and has to make the decision if she should try to rescue them.
The synopsis had me curious as it sounds a bit difference from your classic slasher flick.
The other kids are absolutely horrible to her, but do they deserve to die?
Not quite as engaging as I'd hoped and there are several scenes of stealth like Manhunt or MGS, as the overweight Sara sneaks about without trying to be detected by her parents or a search party or the kidnapper.
Interesting finale, though as the main character decides the fate of her tormentors.
