"There will be blood".(Netflix) Excellent flick about an oil prospector in the early 1900s. Quite long but didn't feel long at all. Some amazing scenes.

Watched The Lobster; I'm now on a streak of 2 movies I picked irritating the life out of my partner. Again though, I liked it more than she did, but also again I still wanted a little more out of it. The deadpan delivery of absolutely everything made for some hilarious moments, and the social commentary's somewhat smart, but perhaps stretched a bit too thin.

The Lobster is a film that's been on my watch list for a while.

As well as Barbenheimer this weekend we have also watched The Lost Boys which I had never actually seen. I was very surprised this was not like anything I expected. It honestly felt like a mash up of 2 films which were battling for my attention; a Goonies-type movie hunting vampires and some dark Warriors kinda movie. I found the jumps between the fin kid stuff to gore rather distracting.

I can see myself liking this at a certain point in my life perhaps but overall it was entertaining but not as amazing as some people went on about it when I first really heard much about it at university.

Another film we both watched for the first time tonight was Venom. First comic book movie I have enjoyed in a long time, it was pretty good!

I'm just Ken, anywhere else I'd be a ten, am I destined to live and die a life of blonde fragility...

Yes, I saw Barbie. What a wonderful film, I loved it. A really, genuinely funny film, and with such flawless production and costume design that it was a delight to look at.

It did sag a little bit in the middle when we were zipping back and forth between Barbieland and Real World - and there was definitely too much soliloquising overall - but as a complete package (smooth and unsculpted, naturally) it absolutely rocked.

I think Neon's interpretation as Kens as another dimension or view into the experience of women at large is an interesting and valid one but I also think they have a good message for young men as Dogg points out.

The whole sequence where Ken is overjoyed to find out about the patriarchy had me dying. This is probably Ryan Gosling's best work. And Margot Robbie just IS a human Barbie.

An impeccable film? Not quite...but impeccable vibes? Oh yes.

Why is wakka wearing a cone of Shame?

I saw Oppenheimer (cinema) and it flew by (especially as I missed the first 15 minutes because of road closures, grrr). Totally gripping, but not thrilling like Nolan's other work, if I'm honest and I'm in no rush to see it again, but definitely worth seeing.

Shin Kamen Rider (Prime).
Should've loved this, but didn't click. If it was on a clips show like OutThere, I'd be all over it, but it felt a bit repetitive and maudlin by the end.

Stand By Me (NowTV)
One from the Bucke List poster, but a joy to watch again and definitely hits different as an adult. I didn't realise how much of an impact the film had made and how much I inadvertently quote it!

It's because I had a bet with Brad in the VR thread over whether Apple's headset would include a component on a cord you have to put in your pocket, and I lost

Went to see Oppenheimer tonight. Really enjoyed it. Held my attention for all three hours no bother. Such a great cast and outstanding performances from Murphy, Blunt and Downey Jr. The early scenes portraying visualization of the atoms were really quite inspired.
I’m also surprised how busy it is for showings of this film still.

Watched The Fabelmans at the weekend. On paper it didn't really capture my attention ... and terms like 'deeply personal film' generally put me off. But I also kept seeing Spielberg magic here and there too so I took a punt on a blind buy. The film's autobigraphical period covers 10 years in Spielberg/Sammy's young life ... from kid to young adult. It's not all sweetness, that's for sure. And the film does a great job in unveiling the parents we assumed were perfect ... who project themselves as so ... but in realitly there are flaws in us all. it captures some special relationships along the way ... along with young Sammy's growing love for film and film-making. And it also works as a beautiful time capsule for the period ... especially the family camping trip that almost looks like a 50s sit-com. I don't mind admitting that the emotional beats resonated. And the closing scene was a proper punch-the-air surprise and treat.

Then I watched Sorcerer. It's another interpretation of The Wages of Fear ... but this time with a piping-hot William Friedkin coming off French Connection and The Exorcist and given carte blanche to do what he wants. First things first, this was a massive, career derailing failure. But it's one of those films that disappeared and then finally found its audience and is now considered a masterpiece. And it certainly is. I'd seen it before and I was still biting my nails to the bone. It's a simple story of four wrong-uns on the lam in a south-American town. When a nearby oilwell explodes into a jet of fire, delicate and out-of-date explosives are needed to get it under control ... but they need transporting across super-rough terrain. It's high rewards and high-stakes and four desperate men are needed. The film is all on location in the Dominican Republic (as well at stints in Paris, Israel and Mexico) and the extreme conditions create an atmosphere you just can't fake. A score by Tangerine Dream adds to the fever too. Class film! The blu is only around £6 and features a humourous interview with Nicholas Winding Refn and William Friedkin (who takes no crap from the young upstart ) ... watch the film first though.

Found the perfect window to watch 12 Angry Men last night. What a treat. The writing is something else ... the personality and character of each juror comes across so naturally ... got to shine a light on some special performances there too. 90 minutes in that hot, sweaty room is up there with my favourite film experiences. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Also watched Scream 6. Not sure what I was expecting after the disappointing last one but the shift to New York sounded like a fun caper. But it's not. It's marginally more entertaining than V but that's not saying much. There's just nothing to surprise ... it just goes through the motions. Saying that, my 14 year old son loved it so what do I know.

Scream 5 was such a snore. Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox's turns in that were genuinely some of the worst acting I've seen in a major film for some time. Sad to hear the quality didn't pick up much with 6.

I've not been on top of film watching at home much of late...found myself working late and just generally hammering through manga during off time rather than settling down to watch a film or play a game.

However, motivated to watch Barbie on the best screen possible recently, I found myself researching the meta on cinema screens. That led me to Dolby screens. They're only operated by Odeon in the UK and a ticket to one is £22. Which then in turn led me to Odeon Limitless, cos it's only £17.99 a month with a minimum 3 month subscription period. So basically 2 or 3 cinema tickets cost for unlimited screenings for 3 months.

So yeah, I have Odeon Limitless now. So far I've only seen Barbie and Lost in the Stars.

This is China's big ass blockbuster this year, which has domestically crushed the American competition in the shape of Indy 5 and The Flash (is there any territory where Indy 5 and The Flash didn't get comprehensively dunked on? No, apparently).

It's a twisty turny Gone Girl type story, based apparently on a French comic thriller stage play from 1960.

The gist is that this fella and his wife go on holiday to an invented country in Southeast Asia which is like a mashup of Indonesia and Thailand, and he wakes up one day and there's a woman next to him who claims to be his wife, but he is certain isn't (yeah, does sound like a holiday to Thailand).

He then meets a friendly Chinese cop - who for some unknown reason is in Southeast Asia in full uniform - and a bad-ass Chinese lawyer woman who does bad-ass stuff like being really good at pool and riding a motorbike recklessly (who reminded me and my partner of Joy in Shenmue 2). They agree to help him crack the case, but soon begin to lose patience with his story. Is he going crazy - or is he really at the heart of a conspiracy?

It's not one I can really wholeheartedly recommend, but it's quite an enjoyable if entirely bonkers story.

Anyway, thanks to our Limitless passes we've gone cinema booking mad and have now got lined up for this weekend:

Joy Ride (we were keen to see this anyway, looks fun)
The Meg 2 (would have skipped without an unlimited pass - but def curious to see what Ben Wheatley does with the material)
Talk to Me (looks interesting, reviewed well)

And we've even got The First Slam Dunk booked up for the end of the month too.

All outstanding turns, with Lee J Cobb being the finest. You hate the stubborn, bigoted loudmouth, and cheer when someone says he deserves to get ‘stepped on’, but genuinely feel his desperate heartbreak when he tears up the photo and crumples, sobbing ‘not guilty’ to his son as much as the defendant. Truly excellent character acting.

Devil’s Bait (1959)

Very strange quota quickie starring Gordon Jackson.

The tone is light and breezy as a bakery is riddled with rats and calls the council for help. A receptionist puts the baker onto an odd job man who likes the taste of a good scotch. In his wisdom, he puts bread soaked in cyanide next to the rat holes. He then goes and gets smashed in a pub, while the baker’s wife inadvertently bakes a loaf using the tin in which the poison was mixed.

Cue a race against the clock to make sure that no one eats it.

The tone shifts rapidly, but the film is tight and brief, with a few great characters sketched out. It’s only an hour and I enjoyed every daft/anxious moment.

7/10

Barbie. Didn't enjoy it much. Barely made me laugh and the messaging was garbled and unclear as if written by AI. Sets were lovely but not enough to stop me from being bored.

Kickboxer. Not seen this before. Incredible really.
