Story-wise, Zero was absolutely dire, but you have to admit its varitech fights ruled the world. And hey, there's a full fighter -> battroid transformation, in slo-mo and incredible detail. We'd been waiting for that our whole lives.

Frontier is a full-length series, AFAIK. Them shots look expensive indeed, but not enough for an OVA

ntsc is back up woo ^^

Macross Frontier ep1- i'll be seriously impressed if the rest of the tv show stays that well animated considering it isn't an OVA like zero. Anyway liked what i saw, certainly set after Macross7 in the SDF universe(never seen 7 just read about it) not so sure about the space monsters they just feel like it ripping off Gunbuster and the VT-25 look like total crap in that space armour so when it dropped it to speedup i was like 'HELL YEAH'. Anyway better than Gunm00(which itself is improving). Loved the ending song

Grayman 60-63 - finally back to the proper story with lenlee kickass fight vs lvl3, made more sense in animated form.

latest Clannad, genshiken, Shana, ef memories providing some good viewing. Dennu Coil had really good ending with them managing to tie up all the loose strings, top show, easily up there with TTGL and Seirei no Moribito from last season.

The end song is a remake of Do you remember love sung by Lynn Minmay from the original Macross, It was the song that won the Zentradi war. I prefer the original version myself, the new one sounds too muted.

The movie remake of the original macross tv series is a classic which is subtitled do you remember love. It makes me want to watch it again, if i can ever find the tape. :P

So far, I'm interested in "Welcome to the NHK", "Death Note" and "Azumanga Daioh". Which one of these would you recommend - or perhaps all of them? My taste is with the genres of comedy, drama and action (and perhaps some romance?) as I already got Akira, Eagle, Tuxedo Gin, GTO, Black & White++. I'm not particularly interested in fantasy, elfs and magic spells
If you liked Azumanga, you'll love Yotsubato since it's by the same guy and equally as funny. I'd recommend One Piece as well. It has everything you could ever need. It may seem a bit childish but it's just amazing once you get into it. Nodame Cantabile is a great romance/comedy series should you be after something like that. Spiral is an interesting mystery-ish series which I'm quite enjoying so that may be up your street.

Can't think of any action series I've read of the top of my head which don't include fantasy elements.

Should you need a hand locating any of these series to "aqquire" via the internet, give me a shout and I'll sort you out with some links.

Just started watching Gurren-Lagann. You guys were right: it's great. Super robot isn't my cup of tea, but super robot that doesn't take itself seriously, well... I guess I can dig it.

Now if only I could locate subs for episode 5... The full series pack I've downloaded doesn't seem to have them -- just an unsubbed AVI file.

I haven't read anyone of the ones I'm interested in, but their reviews in NEO captured my eyes. I've heard about "Yotsubato", but only because it's by the same person that did Azumanga. Know anything about "Welcome to the NHK" or "Death Note"? NEO gave the latter a "best manga of 2007"-award.

Ah, sorry! I misread. Thought you said you were reading those at the moment and were after more suggestions. Welcome to the NHK starts off as a fairly comic look at a japanese guy that's jobless and stuck in his appartment all day and how he gradually becomes slightly over-paranoid. From what I've read of it though, it turns gradually more darker as the guy and some of the people he meets become more and more disturbed as they try to basically get lives almost. Very disturbing in some places. Possibly worth a look if you can handle that sort of stuff.

Death Note I've not personally read but I have seen the manga spin-off which supposedly takes most of it's material from the manga bar a few changes and it's quite a good series. A very clever thinking series as it basically follows around someone trying to kill people and get away with it. Definitely worth checking out.

Dennou Coil - finished it off myself quite recently (2 completed series in as many weeks! Yay! ). Anyway I thought it was a wonderful ending to a great show and easily one of the best anime shows of the year for me. Certainly up there with the likes of Lagann and Moribito (as Tobal mentioned). It was great that they managed to tie up everythng (or near enough) and as a result left me quite fulfilled, though I have been suffering from post series depression. I would love to come back to this world again and see all these wonderful characters back in action. For example I personally wouldn't mind having a whole series of standalone episodes/adventures like we had for episodes 1-13 ish (the little fights between the hackers club, the bearded ones, the festival and the challenge after it etc...). I think it could make for a great slice of life show. I'm thinking Mushishi but more comedic and child-like in nature, I suppose you could have some more sombre and serious episodes too like "The Last Plesiosaur" episode. Might never happen but I can dream.

If I were to be supercritical I'd say it was at times confusing what with all the terms flying around. That said they did manage to keep it on the right side for the most part and explained away the terms and phenomena etc... or even made them mysteries to the characters as well. I also thought they could have perhaps spent a bit more time on

                  Yasako's bully

. They seemed to gloss over that in a fairly short, rather hurried confrontation and left it rather undeveloped to me. I also enjoyed the first half of the series more when they had the stand alone episodes but I'm not sure if that's a fault of the series or just me being more into the slice of life, more relaxed, rather storyless episodes. I don't think I had much to complain about for the second half of the show. It was quite exhilarating with plot twists, cliffhangers, revelations coming thick and fast. So perhaps it is just me being me.

Now to catch up on some of the new shows like Genshiken...

The Azumanga manga is nice, although there are only the 4 books and it kind of feels like it could keep going. Its similar to the anime which is based on it, ie its about a group of school girls and has lots of laughs etc, but its done in a 'peanuts' style strip ie each 4 cells or so make up a sketch, quite often with a punchline of somesort at the end. Its one of my favourites to be honest and i was quite depressed when i finished it.

I've only read the first NHK and i liked it but i also really liked the anime series. Its much the same but it does seem to be slightly more dark/sinister.

The anime is almost exactly the same as the manga for most of the episodes up until roughly the last 4 or so episodes. The production company then added a cheerful ending to wrap up the series, which I quite enjoyed, but beyond that point the manga descends further and further into the characters...despair I suppose it is. I've not gotten back to reading the latest chapters so I couldn't possibly say how it develops more than that. It's still interesting though even if it's not all sunshine and smiles.

I've only seen the NHK anime as well and would recommend it highly, unfortunately I can relate to it far too much so that's why it's a favourite of mine. I could see more "normal" people getting frustrated with most of the characters... but then no normal people watch anime anyway right? I really should check out the manga if it's darker.

I've been having a US TV binge lately and have run out/got bored with that so back on the anime again. Upto ep 15 of Dennou Coil, after what's been said I'm really looking forward to the rest. How excellent was the beard episode? I could probably show that to someone who'd not seen the rest of the series and they would like it. The Plesiosaur episode was great as well but so, so sad, I think it ended in the best way though.

Not sure whether to carry on with Clannad now, I'm up to episode 4 now but after finding out that

Nagisa isn't the ghost I've found myself not as interested. We'll see though!

Can't believe Genshiken managed to pass me by but then I wasn't paying attention to the "scene" when it came out. I got hold of the first series, I love any show that lets you hear the characters thoughts. It would have been better for me to have seen it when it came out, or even better had it come out in 2002 but unfortunately I can't go back in time (as much as I crave to).

I would carry on with Clannad the stuff in your spoiler does happen... is all i'll say and the ending to that arc it contains had me holding back man tears.

Do it do it do it do it. If you're not satisfied by the end of ep 9, you have no soul.

Genshiken 12: And there we have it, the series all finished. Bit inconclusive with

                            Sasahara ana Oguie

but the ending was quite nice

showing everyone doing their respective stuff

                            .

Time to dig out the manga now.

Deal It was very possible I had no soul, and then I watched the Plesiosaur episode of Dennou Coil and found there very much is a soul burried away in there. Young girls arn't as good as illegal artificial intellegent dinosaurs though so Clannad has a challenge on it's hands

Good'ish final ep, i've read the start of vol.9 but it seems the anime didn't get as far vol.8 so i gotta go find that now...

as it seems Sasa*Oguie hooked up earlier.
