Recently received a payment via an echeque - is there a good chance this could bounce? I wasn't going to send the item till it'd cleared but this women wants it for her son for christmas. She seems reliable, can I safely send it? Lets say it were to bounce, would I have any help from paypal getting my money back?

No, don't send it till it clears, there's a chance it may not clear and Paypal tell you not to send till it clears.

echeques are a pain in the ass, often take an age to clear, and the only payments problems I've ever had on ebay involved echeques.

The reason I moved to only paypal payment for my auctions was becuase of cheques taking too long to clear and also bouncing, now I have the same problems with Echeques! I wish I could stop echeques as a payment method.

Decided to wait, its my old DS so I'll probably chuck in a game or two to make up for ruining the little mans Christmas.

          Cheers for the help.

Don't do that - if she wanted it that quickly she shouldn't have sent a cheque. Postal orders/cash/proper Paypal payments would have been easy enough to sort out, it's hardly your fault!

              Toythatkills is right.
DO NOT CHUCK IN ANY EXTRAS DUE TO THE WAIT.

If they wanted the item that desparately they'd have paid u instantly so its their fault not yours that its gonna be delayed.
And for Gods sake wait for the eCheque to clear fully. If u read back a few pages you'll see that I sold my old 360 on ebay & the buyer paid by eCheque & it bounced 10 days later. Fortunatley I hadnt sent it out.

In fact, when I sold my 360 the buyer wanted a tracking number assuming it was gonna be sent straightaway, so he tried to pull a fast 1 on me. Maybe this woman is trying the same with u by saying its an Xmas present.

You are not covered by PAYPAL either so it would be a long legal challenge to get yout money back. Paypal advise you never to send until a echeque clears. If she wants it quick ask her to cancel the Echeque and pay ou by instant instead

Even better ; disable your account from accepting e-cheques all together!

                  Here is how you do it;

                  1) Log into your PayPal account.
                  2) Click on 'Profile' on the thin bar underneath the main large buttons at the top of the page.
                  3) Under the third heading 'Selling Preferences', click the fifth option down which is 'Payment Receiving Preferences'.
                  4) Scroll down a bit, and check the tickbox next to 'Pay with eCheck for website and Smart Logo payments, or German bank transfer for all website payments except eBay'.
                  5) Click the 'Save' button at the bottom of the page.

Despite the poor wording of the text next to the tickbox, enabling this option will actually block people from sending you an e-cheque for something that they bought on eBay.

If they try and send an e-cheque they will get a message stating that the seller cannot accept the payment and to get in touch. You can then ask them to pay via another method, or add a credit/debit card onto their account to send an instant payment (e-cheques result from someone having only a bank account added onto their account - the money has to clear from their bank to PayPal, and then PayPal hold onto it for a bit.. before you eventually get it and are charged the same fees as an instant payment - but you've had to wait 10 days plus for the pleasure..).

It would be wise to add some text in your auction stating that e-cheques are not accepted if you choose to disable them.

Hope this helps for future sales..

I'll do that. Thanks very much for the help. She seems to be suggesting this is the first times its happened; maybe she's talking rubbish, or maybe her card has just expired. She hasn't much feedback either.

Either way, I might chuck in a **** game (I've a copy of Need for Speed I've been meaning to get rid off) anyway - no harm, and while its not my fault, she's been very decent about it all and hasn't kicked up a fuss.

If the cheque bounces on the other hand...

All staged - but class all the same. Should get scammers into the public eye which is a good thing as so many people end up buying an empty box because they didnt read the add.

Call me a tight bastard, but I still wouldnt bother chucking in anything for free. She made the mistake of paying by eCheque.
Plus why dont u try selling NFS separatley? U may not get much for it but as a certain supermarket likes to say "every little helps"!

I'll definatley be setting up that eCheque blocker thingy too. I've accepted eCheques and most have failed 10 days later which leaves me to relist an item & probably get less for it due to the long wait.

Merry Christmas all. Would appreciate paypal / ebay veterans' thoughts on this.

I bought something which I was told would take about six weeks to be delivered.Just before 45 days was up I opened a dispute on paypal and let the seller know that hopefully it was just a formality as the Christmas post might have slowed it down.

I've just got a message saying that because I paid for insurance they can send me another of the item (it's quite a big ebay store) immediately once I've closed my paypal dispute, but not before. Here is what they said.

                            Hello,

Thank you for e-mailing us and we sincerely apologize for any
inconvenience that we may have caused you.

Based on the information that you have provided for us, we can only
assume that your order has been lost or stolen during its transit to you.
Because you have paid for the insurance, we are able to ship you a replacement order, free of charge, immediately. However, our records indicate that you currently have a PayPal claim opened against us. We completely understand your concerns and the initiation of your claim and we are more than willing to work with you to resolve any issues. However, we cannot dispatch any additional shipments while the claim remains open as PayPal claims do not regard any secondary or additional shipments.

Please let us know once you have closed the claim for us so that we can
immediately ship you a replacement order and deliver what you have paid
                            for.

Thank you so much for your patience and willingness to work with us to
                            get
                            your concerns resolved.

                            Kind regards,
While it seems genuine - they do have, after all, over 200 000 ebay score - there's still the nagging concern that if I close the paypal dispute and they tell me to bugger off, I'll be up the creek. So I'd like to know what other members would do. Should I insist on a refund instead?

The total cost was about twenty quid.

                            Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to me. Just stand your ground and wait for the paypal resolution to (hopefully) rule in your favour.

                                /sigh

Many years of using Ebay (mostly as a buyer) and it seems I have hit my first issue (maybe, depends on how it pans out).

Last week I used a Buy It Now auction for a brand new King of Fighters: Orochi Collection + NeoGeo 3 Stick PS2 set from a seller in Japan. Good feedback etc. and it's just arrived (and signed for) open it up and find a lovely Garou: Mark of the Wolves + Neo Geo Stick 2 PS2 set instead (whcih I already purchased many years ago).

Fired off an email to the seller hoping for resolution but I am a bit concerned as:

                                a. I really wanted the KOF Orocohi set and now I'm thinking he doesn't have it
                                b. I have to send it back to him (possibly at my own expense) and as the item has been signed for, any dispute I raise with Paypal may find in his favour.

                                Not happy.
