Win streak at 4 for defending champions

    By Shan Seman
    Reporter

Defending champion Mwaliyas was riding on a three-game win streak entering yesterday's bout against Da Lani Kynez, and by the time last season's title winners left the Marianas High School Gymnasium, they increased the streak to four games.

This after Mwaliyas stunned Da Lani Kynez with a 62-27 juice out victory in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League.

Surprisingly, only one session was needed for a winner to be declared as a match normally takes two sessions, with two sets played in each.

The Mwaliyas players showed no sign of rust after Rocball action went on a break and made their 2007 debut with style as the team controlled the first set to take the early advantage in the match. Shane Yamada opened the game with a kee, and Mwaliyas held Da Lani Kynez to just four points while going off for 16 for the first set win.

Da Lani Kynez tried to return the favor in the second set and took a 2-0 lead to get things going. Yamada, however, connected for a goal to give his team a 3-2 lead. The shot sparked a charge as Mwaliyas increased the lead to 6-2, and won most of the long rallies to take the set, 17-4.

With that, Mwaliyas held a comfortable 25-point lead, 33-8, in the overall points tally.

With their backs against the wall, Da Lani Kynez put up a better performance in the third set. Myron Laniyo stepped up and even made an incredible save after a teammate's return attempt went far wide. Laniyo, who served as setter, raced to the ball, and despite playing the ball on a tough angle, bumped it right over the net to save a point for his team. Both teams were at set point, 14-14, and Da Lani Kynez had just enough juice to pull through for a 15-14 win.

Despite the win, Mwaliyas still held a comfortable advantage with a 47-23 lead heading into the final set, which meant the team needed to win to close the match. A win by Da Lani Kynez would send the game into o-kon-overtime.

Yamada and Gary Philip came up big for Mwaliyas in the set as the two high flyers stepped up and pounded the ball to lead their team to a 15-4 clincher.

The final score was no indication on how the match was played as both teams were aggressive and engaged in countless long rallies, which attracted applause from all in attendance.

Phillip finished as the game's heavy hitter as he led Mwaliyas with 16 points. The lean machine was most effective on the service area as he connected for seven aces. He also had a kee.

Yamada and Val Taisakan were also superb as the two finished with 11 and 10 points, with Yamada smacking four kees and a goal and Taisakan hitting two aces and three kees.

Stephanie Arnold and Kaleo Olaitiman each had six points to lead Da Lani Kynez (2-2). Arnold had an ace and two kees, while Olaitiman added two aces and a kee.

Rocball action continues on Monday Watch & Learn and Dublon Chiefs closing out the first round of 2007. Watch & Learn and Dublon Chiefs are also undefeated with 3-0 records.

Watch & Learn, Dublon Chiefs in tough battle

        By Shan Seman
        Reporter

Only three teams have undefeated records in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League, but after today, the number will be cut to one.

Powerhouses Watch & Learn and Dublon Chiefs both entered their bout yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium with perfect 3-0 win-loss cards, and both are determined to keep their undefeated records intact.

The two teams were evenly matched in the first two and a half sets and today's conclusion is expected to be one that will be remembered.

After two complete sets, Watch & Learn holds a six-point advantage, 34-28.

Both teams were determined to grab the early advantage, and thus, the first set was neck-and-neck. Watch & Learn's Tyce Mister was able to grab the highlight of the set as he knocked in a goal, helping his team squeeze out a 16-14 nail-biter.

The Chiefs were confident they could beat Watch & Learn, and continued to give the opposition a good run for their money in the second set. Like the first, the second set was tightly fought. Watch & Learn was up by just two points, 13-11, when Maria Ornes came through with a big goal to give her team set point, 16-11.

But the Dublon Chiefs answered right back as Ybonn Kapwich responded with a goal of his own to cut the deficit back down to two points, 14-16.

The Chiefs, however, were not able to keep their charge going, and Watch & Learn was able to close the set with an 18-14 win.

That resulted in a 34-28 lead for Watch & Learn with two more sets remaining in regulation.

The two teams began play in the third set, which was not completed before time expired. The Dublon Chiefs currently lead the set courtesy of a strong start, 7-1.

Add all the points together, including the third set, and both teams are knotted at 35-35.

The third set resumes today at 11:30am.

Mister currently leads all scorers with 11 points after knocking in two aces, two kees, and a goal.

Fourth-set explosion lifts Watch & Learn

          By Shan Seman
          Reporter

Watch & Learn was finally given a strong test-only for the first three sets, though.

After watching a six-point lead slip out of their hands, Watch & Learn exploded with authority in the fourth set to remain undefeated while handing Dublon Chiefs its first loss with a 58-44 victory in the World Organized Rocball Community League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

As reported yesterday, Watch & Learn was up 34-28 after two sets of play, and the two teams were knotted at 35-35 mid-way through the third set after the Dublon Chiefs took a 7-1 lead.

When action resumed yesterday, Watch & Learn was able to close in on their opponents, but the Chiefs were determined and were able to win the set, 16-9, when Tarnes Kapwich connected for a xunk.

At that point of the bout, the Chiefs were able to take the lead in the overall points tally, but just by a point, 44-43.

Watch & Learn then kicked into another level and began to pound away in the fourth set. Monster kees by Tyce Mister were too much for Dublon Chiefs to handle, and Watch & Learn quickly turn what was a tightly fought bout into an easy win after shutting down their opponents and clinching the win with a 15-0 victory.

Watch & Learn won a tough first set, 16-14, and again edged the opposition, 18-14, in the second set.

Mister finished as the game's heavy hitter after going off for 19 points. The veteran volleyball player was good for two aces, two xunks, four kees, and a goal.

With the win, the Watch & Learn players improved their win-loss record to 4-0, tying defending champion Mwaliyas atop the team standings. The loss dropped Dublon Chiefs to 3-1.

Rocball action continues tomorrow with Kich Fairo battling Mwaliyas. Watch & Learn returns on Monday against Da Lani Kynez, while the Chiefs play next Wednesday against Black Magic.

Mwaliyas, Kich fairo battling in WOR

            By Shan Seman
            Reporter

Defending champion Mwaliyas is looking to extend its win streak, while Kich Fairo seems determined to hand their opponents their first loss of the season.

The two teams collided yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium in the World Organized Rocball Community League, and after two complete sets, the two were separated by just a point.

Mwaliyas, which is currently tied atop the team standings with Watch & Learn with identical 4-0 win-loss cards, got off to a very slow start as Kich Fairo grabbed early control. Kich Fairo dominated the early session and scored eight unanswered points to take a comfortable lead.

Mwaliyas finally woke up and began to fight back, but the deficit was just too much to overcome and Kich Fairo was able to take the opener, 15-10.

Kich Fairo was again the aggressor at the start of the second set as Mwaliyas returned to its cold ways. Things were going Kich Fairo's way and was five points away from taking the set after going off for a 10-5 lead. Mwaliyas struggled from the service area, committing three mishaps that resulted in the subtraction of three points.

Mwaliyas, however, refused to give in and began storming back. Mwaliyas swung momentum to their corner, went on a big run, and stunned Kich Fairo to take the win, 15-11.

With that, Kich Fairo saw its lead shrink to just a point in the overall points tally, 26-25.

The two teams were playing in the third set when time expired. Mwaliyas rode its momentum into the set and dominated as the team currently holds a 12-1 lead.

Shane Yamada of Mwaliyas currently leads the game with 10 points after connecting for a xunk and four kees, while teammate Gary Philip has eight points on three aces and a kee.

Graceful Fiden, Tom Malone, and J.R. Gechig each have four points for Kich Fairo.

The two teams return to finish the bout today at 11am

THE Mwaliyas strengthened their semifinals chances in the World Organized Rocball Community League after beating Kich Fairo in four sets, 58-39, last Friday at the Marianas High School Gym.

The win improved the Mwaliyas record in the second round to 2-0. They won their opening game against Da Lani Kynez.

Kich Fairo dropped to a 0-2 slate and needs to sweep its remaining matches to have a chance in the next round.

The six teams that advanced to the second round will play only five games each. After the second round, the top four teams will move into the crossover semifinals, which will have a best-of-three format.

The Mwaliyas, who are hoping to defend their title this season, picked up where they left off winning the third and fourth sets of the match.

The remaining part of the third set was played last Friday with the Mwaliyas? Shane Yamada serving and the defending champions leading at 12-1.

The Mwaliyas scored five more points to notch a 17-7 triumph in the third set.
Entering the fourth set, Kich Fairo was pressed to win to send the game into overtime. But the Mwaliyas had no plans to extend the match, as they posted a 16-6 victory to end the game.

The first two sets of the Mwaliyas-Kich Fairo tiff were played last Thursday.
Kich Fairo drew first blood, 15-10, but failed to sustain its momentum losing the second set, 11-15.

Yamada led the Mwaliyas? win scoring 17 points on five kees, one xunx, one ace and a goal.

Three goals were scored in the game and all were from Mwaliyas players with Graceful Fiden drilling one in the latter part of the third set. Yamada and Valentine Taisacan notched a goal apiece in the fourth set.

Eight aces, five xunxs and nine kees were scored in the game.

Watch & Learn too much for Da Lani Kynez

                        By Shan Seman

Watch & Learn was simply too much for Da Lani Kynez to handle yesterday in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League.

Watch & Learn, which comprises of Marianas High School staff, took three of the four sets, including the final set of regulation to juice out and win, 57-43, at the school's gymnasium.

With the win, Watch & Learn remains one of the two undefeated teams in the league and ties defending champion Mwaliyas atop the team standings. Both teams have perfect 5-0 win-loss cards.

Da Lani Kynez got off to a cold start and Watch & Learn took advantage. The teachers had good placement on their shots and got some help from Da Lani Kynez courtesy of a mishap on first serve. With things going their way, Watch & Learn was easily able to take the first set, 15-5.

The Da Lani Kynez players showed they weren't going to be manhandled and returned the favor in the second set. The team sizzled in the early goings and broke out to an 11-1 lead before closing the set strong for a 16-9 victory.

Watch & Learn, however, still held the upper hand as the team led the overall points tally, 24-21.

The overall spread got wider after the third set as Watch & Learn returned to solid form. The team opened with a 9-2 run, then got a big blast from Tyce Mister, who gave them a 12-2 lead after connecting for a goal. Da Lani Kynez fought back, but was not able to complete a comeback as Watch & Learn took the set, 17-8.

Mister led Watch & Learn with 15 points after smashing six kees and a goal, while Mark McDonald had 12 points on six kees.

Myron Laniyo finished as the game's heavy hitter after leading Da Lani Kynez with 18 points on nine kees.

Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo are in the middle of a very tough battle as both teams put up solid efforts yesterday in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Da Lani Kynez leads by a slim margin after taking two of the three sets played, 39-35.

Da Lani Kynez got a huge boost from Alex Laniyo, who sparked the team from the opening serve as he connected for a xunk, followed by an ace and a goal while at the service area to give his team an early 7-0 lead in the first set.

Kich Fairo finally got on the scoreboard as Tom Malone smashed a goal, but the team was not able to close the gap as Da Lani Kynez continued to push hard for a 15-8 win.

Da Lani Kynez continued to control the bout and was again strong from the service area. Getting a turn at serve, Rocball veteran Myron Laniyo put some fire on his connections and nailed three aces and a xunk to put his team in front. Kich Fairo was not able to build any momentum, and as a result, Da Lani Kynez was able to close the set, 15-8.

With that, Da Lani Kynez headed into the third set with a comfortable 30-16 lead in the overall points tally.

Just when it seemed Kich Fairo was heading in the wrong road, the team came up with big hits to swing momentum to their corner in the third set. After converting on kill opportunities, Kich Fairo was able to open the set with a 6-2 run. Dean Mathew then connected on consecutive aces.

Da Lani Kynez got a big hit from Myron Laniyo, who connected for a xunk. He opted to add points to his team's corner, resulting in his team cutting their deficit to three points, 9-12.

After Da Lani Kynez lost serve, Typhoon Saito stepped up for Kich Fairo. The determined competitor served up a goal for a 16-9 lead, then closed the set strong with another goal from the service line to give his team a 19-9 victory.

Laniyo brothers Alex and Myron currently lead the scoring with Alex recording 15 points on two aces, a xunk, a kee, and a goal, and Myron connecting for four aces, two xunks, and a kee for 14 points.

Saito and Mathew have eight points apiece to lead Kich Fairo, with Saito knocking in an ace and two goals and Mathew pounding away for three aces and a kee. Malone also has seven points on an ace, a kee, and a goal.

As reported yesterday, Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo were neck and neck in their bout in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League.

The two completed the first three sets of play on Wednesday with Da Lani Kynez leading, 39-35, and returned to the Marianas High School Gymnasium yesterday finish off their contest.

Kich Fairo was already leading the fourth set, 5-4, when action was halted on Wednesday, but the team was not able to increase the lead and watched Da Lani Kynez steam ahead for a 56-44 juice out victory.
