Mwaliyas close to recording third win

    By Shan Seman
    Reporter

    Thursday, November 10, 2005

Defending champion Mwaliyas is close to recording its third straight win in as many chances in the ongoing 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League after taking the first two sets against newcomer Just For Fun yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Reigning most valuable player Pedro Iguel got Mwaliyas off on the right foot as he pounded the ball for a goal to start their scoring spree. The first set featured a whopping four goals as teammate Shane Yamada knocked in one as well, followed by another by Iguel, highlighting the team?s 17-9 victory.

Just For Fun?s Kevin Aldan accounted for the other goal?the second of the set.

The goals ended but not the aggressive play of Mwaliyas as the team continued to bruise the ball with all its might in hopes of stretching its win streak. Despite a mishap on first serves, Mwaliyas still dominated and widened its lead to 17 points, 33-16, with a 16-7 win.

Mwaliyas had another service error at the start of the third set but still managed to creep ahead and take the lead courtesy of well-placed shots. Time expired with the defending champions ahead, 5-2.

The third set resumes today at 11:30am with Yamada at serve. If Just For Fun loses the set, they must win the fourth set to prevent Mwaliyas from juicing out. Winning the fourth set will also enable Just For Fun to force o-kon?Rocball term for overtime.

With a win, Mwaliyas will move ahead of B-n-S in the WOR standings. B-n-S is the only other team that has yet to drop a match and holds a 2-0 record.

Yamada was on target all day long and leads the match with 13 points after connecting for two aces, a xunk, two kees, and a goal, while Iguel has 10 points on two goals and two kees. Dennis Camacho and Aldan lead Just For Fun with four and three points. Camacho has two kees and Aldan has a goal.

        Mwaliyas still undefeated in Rocball

        By Roselyn B. Monroyo
        Variety News Staff

THE Mwaliyas extended their winning run to three, outclassing Just for Fun in o-kon yesterday in round 3 of the World Organized Rocball High School League at the Marianas High School Gym.

The victory gave Mwaliyas the solo lead with a perfect 3-0 record, one game ahead of second placer B n?S, which has a 2-0 slate.

The Mwaliyas had a good chance of keeping their record clean when they won the first two sets last Tuesday, 17-9, 16-7.

They were playing in the third set and leading at 5-2, when the game was stopped, as players needed to go back to their classes. In the resumption of the match, the Mwaliyas picked up where they left off, winning the third set, 15-9.

But Mwaliyas failed to keep its momentum as Just for Fun took the fourth set, 16-11, denying the eventual leader a juice out victory and forcing the game into overtime.

Entering the first set o-kon, Mwaliyas led by 18, 59-41, and needed to win only the first set or score a goal to finish the game.

Just for Fun had to prevail in two sets to steal the win, but they faltered in the first try bowing to the Mwaliyas in the first set, 11-1.

The Mwaliyas? Pedro Iguel was the game?s heavy hitter with 18 points. He connected on an ace, two goals and five kees. Shane Yamada supported him with 17 points on four kees, three aces and a goal.

The round 3 of the WOR League ends on Monday with B n S gunning for a share of the lead when it meets Ochobu.

Ochobu close to handing B-n-S first loss

            By Shan Seman
            Reporter/ Saipan Tribune

            Tuesday, November 15, 2005

B-n-S enters today's continuation of their 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League match with their backs against the wall as they trail Ochobu after three sets of play yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Ochobu, which sports a 1-1 win-loss card, led 40-29 when action was halted as time expired.

Determined to hand B-n-S its first loss of the season, Ochobu came out storming and dominated the first set. Despite having two points subtracted from their score midway through due to a xunk by B-n-S, the Ochobu smackers still had momentum in their corner and strolled away for a 16-7 win.

B-n-S retaliated with a stronger charge in the second set as Charles Mesik connected for a goal to highlight a 15-8 victory, which cut the deficit to just two points, 22-24.ft:

B-n-S, however, was not able to maintain momentum and hit a brick wall in the third set as Ochobu recovered from their pedestrian second set with an explosion that lifted them to the win, 16-7.

Ochobu is in good shape entering the final set of regulation with the 11-point breathing room, which means B-n-S must win the set to keep their chances alive and force o-kon.

If the game heads into overtime, Ochobu still has the advantage as the team only needs to win one set while B-n-S must take both o-kon sets to keep pace with league-leader and defending champion Mwaliyas, which hold a 3-0 record.

So far, a total of four aces, four xunks, 10 kees, and a goal have been recorded in the game.

Ochobu's David Tisa leads his team with eight points courtesy of an ace, a xunk, and two kees, while Ichnis Kapwich has three kees for six points.

Myron Laniyo leads B-n-S with two aces and two kees for eight points while Lori Taisacan has four points on an ace and a xunk.

The bout is the final match of the third round, with the fourth round scheduled to begin tomorrow at 11:30am featuring Black Magic and Lagooners. Both teams sit with 2-1 records.

Rocball has four-way tie in second place

              By Shan Seman
              Reporter/Saipan Tribune

              Wednesday, November 16, 2005

Ochobu survived a late charge by B-n-S and edged their opponents courtesy of an impressive run in o-kon to bag their second win of the season yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The win resulted in a four-way tie in the No. 2 spot as Ochobu, B-n-S, Black Magic, and the Lagooners each sport 2-1 win-loss cards. The teams are just a half game behind defending champion Mwaliyas, which sit with a 3-0 record.

As reported earlier, Ochobu headed into the final set of regulation with a 40-29 lead.

The lead and their comfort zone, however, was quickly smashed as B-n-S dug themselves out of a hole and dominated the fourth set to force o-kon.

B-n-S almost stunned Ochobu, coming close to actually rallying and winning the match in regulation. After taking the set, 17-8, the team cut their 11-point deficit to just two points, 46-48. Had the team added three more points to the difference of the set, they would have pulled off the win.

Nonetheless, B-n-S was happy to have forced overtime and seemed to be in control of the first o-kon set. With momentum in their corner, B-n-S dominated the early goings and was a point away from forcing another o-kon set as they led, 9-2.

They were never able to convert for another point after that as Ochobu recovered and retaliated with an 8-0 run to close the set and win the match, 10-2.

Ochobu dominated the first set Monday for a 16-7 win. B-n-S retaliated with a stronger charge in the second set as Charles Mesik connected for a goal to highlight a 15-8 victory, slicing the deficit to just two points, 22-24.

Ochobu rebounded and took the third set, 16-7, to set the stage for yesterday's action.

Ochobu's David Tisa led his team with 12 points eight points courtesy of an ace, a xunk, and four kees, while Ichnis Kapwich has four kees for eight points.

Myron Laniyo was the game's heavy hitter and paced B-n-S with two aces and five kees for 14 points while Lori Taisacan, Melvin Seman, and Alex Laniyo contributed with six points apiece.

Round four kicks off today at 11:30am featuring Black Magic and Lagooners.

Lagooners inch closer to solo second spot

                By Roselyn B. Monroyo
                Variety News Staff

THE Lagooners had the upperhand in the battle for the solo second place in the World Organized Rocball High School League as they won the first two sets of their game against the Black Magic yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

The Black Magic?s tricks in the first set were a flop, as the Lagooners took an easy 15-1 victory.

In the second set, the Black Magic put on more of a show and had a little success as they led in the middle of the set 7-4.

But the Lagooners found an antidote to escape from the Black Magic?s spell with Tito Francisco?s crucial kees and a couple of aces from Typhoon Saito and Denry Fiden en route to a 15-12 victory.

The third set was cut short, as players needed to return to their classes. The Black Magic was leading at 5-0 in the third set, which will resume today with Frank Suda serving.

Francisco was so far the top performer of the match with eight points, drilling four kees. Five aces and six kees were scored in the game.

The Lagooners will enter the third and fourth set leading by nine, 27-18.
If the Black Magic win the third set, the Lagooners can still claim a juice out victory if they prevail in the fourth set and hold the lead.

Twin losses by the Lagooners will give the Black Magic a chance of stealing the game either in the regulation or in overtime. If the Black Magic wins the last two sets and lead after the fourth set, they will be awarded a juice out win. If they lose the third and win in the fourth, but still trail, the game will go into overtime with the Black Magic needing to win two sets o-kon, while the Lagooners must prevail only once.

The Black Magic and the Lagooners are in a three-way tie with Ochobu for second place behind the league-leader Mwaliyas, who have a perfect 3-0 record.

The Black Magic-Lagooners tiff was the first match in the fourth round of the eight-team tournament.

The second game will feature Malat against Ochobu. The second match in the fourth round will be played right after the Black Magic-Lagooners game.

                  Lagooners grab second spot

                  By Roselyn B. Monroyo
                  Variety News Staff

THE Lagooners claimed the solo second place in the World Organized Rocball High School League with a juice out win over the Black Magic, 56-39, yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

The Lagooners now have a 3-1 record, grabbing the No. 2 spot in the team standings behind the undefeated Mwaliyas, who hold a 3-0 slate.
The Black Magic dropped to a 2-2 record.

Only the last two sets of the match were played yesterday with the Lagooners and the Black Magic taking one set each.

The first two sets were played last Tuesday with the Lagooners sweeping the Black Magic, 15-1, 15-12 to take a 17-point lead, 30-13.
The Black Magic was leading the third set, 5-0, when the game was stopped, as the players had to return to their classes.

In the resumption of the match, the Black Magic picked up where they left off claiming a 16-11 victory. However, the Lagooners kept the lead, 41-29, entering the final set in the regulation.

The fourth set was a close battle with the Black Magic hoping to prevail anew and force the game into overtime. And, in the fourth set the lead changed several times. But the Lagooners had other plans, and playing in o-kon was not on their agenda.

They won the match in regulation with a 15-10 victory in the fourth set.
The game?s heavy hitter was Tito Francisco, who scored 12 points on six kees.

The Lagooners connected on three aces and 11 keys, while the Black Magic had three aces, a xunx and four kees. Neither team was able to drill a goal.

Action in the fourth round of the WOR League continues next week with Malat and Ochobu squaring off on Tuesday.

Ochobu routs Malat to force two-way tie for second

                        By Shan Seman
                        Reporter

                        Wednesday, November 23, 2005

Ochobu moved into a tie for second place in the team standings of the ongoing 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League after routing Malat, 53-25, yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The two teams actually began play on Monday, with Malat failing to show up on time. Because of it, only one set was played on the day, with Ochobu squeezing out a 20-17 victory for the early lead.

Action resumed yesterday and was again delayed by the late arrival of Malat, which resulted in Rocball creator Jim Feger issuing a warning to the team.

The early goings of the second set was tight as Malat connected for an ace and a xunk.

The set, however, was dominated by Ochobu as the team recovered and smacked a bunch of 2-pointers courtesy of aces and kees. Highlighting the team?s push was a 3-point play from veteran David Tisa, who pounded the ball into the goal to give his team a 17-6 victory and a 37-23 lead in the overall tally.

It was all Ochobu in the third set as Malat struggled to make good on first serves. Tisa, Kawes Awes, Ramsey Sino, and Ichnis Kapwich each had strong contributions as Ochobu closed the set with ease, 16-2.

The teams started play in the fourth when time expired.

According to Feger, the win was awarded to Ochobu because they led by a mile after the three sets and that it was possible to have finished the game in regulation if it were not for Malat?s tardiness on both days.

Tisa finished as the game?s heavy hitter with 11 points on three aces, a kee, and a goal while Awes added 10 points in four kees and an ace. Kapwich and Sino also had six points apiece, with Kapwich hitting three kees and Sino two kees and an ace.

Julian Fitial led Malat with eight points on three aces and a kee, while Darrel Moteisou had an ace, a xunk, and a kee for six points.

High school Rocball action returns on Monday at 11:30am.

I was in China last week. It was day 10 of 15, and by that time I couldn't concentrate on the Terracotta Warriors for worrying about how Ochobu were getting on. Thank Christ for this thread; I dunno what I'd have done without it.

I also hear that EA have the rights to publish Feger Rocball 2006 early next year, with fully licenced teams and courts. So that'll be cool also
