Jones? goaled Black Magic win in WOR

      By Roselyn B. Monroyo
      Variety News Staff

Dior Jones knocked in a goal in o-kon to lift the Black Magic against Brothers and Sisters, 58-50, in the 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

The win ended the Black Magic?s two-game losing streak and improved their chances in the playoffs as they claimed their third win in six games and now share the fourth place with their victim.

Only the top four teams after the single round regular season will advance to the playoffs.

B n S dropped to a 3-3 record and had their winning streak halted. Prior to the loss to the Black Magic, B n S were enjoying a two-game winning run and shared third place with the Lagooners. B n S sent the game into overtime after escaping with a 15-14 win in the fourth set.

Rocball rules state that the leading team can not win the match despite leading after four sets if it fails to win in the fourth set. The regulation ended at 55-50, in favor of the Black Magic.

B n S won the coin toss and was given an option to either receive or serve. They opted to receive. The Black Magic served and B n S returned the ball with two volleys. The Black Magic received the ball and had three touches to set up a play for Jones.

Jones then spiked the ball from the left corner and it hit B n S?s Myron Laniyo and goalie Melvin Seman, who failed to save the ball from going into the goal.

Jones? spike gave the Black Magic the victory as Rocball rules state that the leading team can win the o-kon if it nails a goal. If not, it needs to win only one set of 11 points, while the trailing team must prevail in two sets.

Jones was the game?s heavy hitter with 11 points on three aces, one kee and a goal.

There were only two goals scored in the game with the other one coming from Laniyo. He drilled it in the first set to lead B n S to a 15-8 victory.

The Black Magic bounced back with a 17-9 win to wrestle the lead going into the third set, 25-24.The Black Magic hung on to the driver?s seat in the third set with a 16-11 triumph. But they failed to claim a juiced out win as B n S won the fourth set and thus sent the game into overtime.

        Side-Out Ain?t Dead

Side-out ain?t dead; it?s been reloaded with a five hit offensive game.

In a five hit offensive game, either team can score points off the serve and during volley, but only the service team has closure.

How can a side-out system be balanced so that the service team has scoring advantage and closure when both teams can score points off the serve and during volley?

The service team has ball control: It controls invasion; how the ball enters it opponent?s field of play, and the length of time / number of hits it has in setting up in response to an opponent?s successful rally.

The service team?s invasion, a served ball or volley comes off one hit. The receiving team has two hits to return a served ball back over the net; one hit, or one bump/set and hit. In both situations, one or the other team can score. Whichever team does score a point/s is awarded the next serve.

Under this rule, teams are under a different but equal balance of challenges to initiate or respond to a competitive situation. It?s not easy to score points offensively with the serve, and it?s not easy to score points defensively with only two hits off a served ball.

With these rules in operation, the significance of the serve is best defined under the side-out system of impact and effect.

When a receiving team successfully hits a served ball back over the net, the service team has five hits to set up attempted scoring. The five hit option opens up opportunities of strategic plays not offered under the restriction of a three hit game. One of the most significant advantages of the five hit play, is that players have two hits to recover from a busted play. If the second hit of the ball is a bad set, the team has one more chance of re-setting the ball to execute the intended play, or recover and change tactics.

In its present day practical use, when a team isn?t able to set up the play they intended, or set up a play at the level of which they wanted to execute it in three hits, they re-load. The fourth and/or fifth hits are often used to save a busted play and recover or reset another player from a different angle on court. How difficult is this to implement? Well, somebody has to learn how to count to five!

With the side-out rule of differentiation, one team has the scoring advantage. The receiving team has two options of hitting a ball to score points and earn the serve. It has two hits off the serve and three hits off any volley after the serve.

Only a team with service has closure and there isn?t a need for the two point margin of winning a set or game in a true offensive and defensive scoring game. With the implementation of a multiple point scoring game and vertical areas of scoring, not every serve will earn either team a point/s.

And, with these rules of differentiation in place, we have resurrected side-out?s competitive spirit.

Side-Out Ain?t Dead, but the Dead Heads aren?t playing Side-Out.

Without having to read through all this dross, can someone summarise just exactly wtf this guff is all about?

By the way, it's "football", not "soccer".

            8) Its about taking a team net sport like volleyball, adding a offensive and defensive scoring systems, with multiple point scoring, and vertical areas of scoring; it is about upgrading volleyball from a picnic circuit game to a higher level of competitive challenges, and its about the stigma from which volleyball's players have developed as sissys; especially with the rallypoint scoring system.

And, I'm going to continue to label it soccer as long as it is considered a non contact sport, or maybe until you can write in the correct pronounciation of "Chadruharazzeb"

I've been looking into the different types of serves in this kind of sport. And, if you are not already aware of it, you might find this interesting. 8)

I'm interested because of what might happen with designing game plans/strategy and/or the percenatges and statistics given in the following article, when a receiving team only has two hits off a serve, a server can score one, two, or three points off the serve, and there are vertical areas of scoring as part of the sport's competitive features.

"When practicing serves, you should practice at least 3 different varieties. In general, a hard, topspin serve, an intermediate normal serve, and a lob creampuff dead-ball serve are good choices to practice.

1.In all normal game situations, you would virtually always use your intermediate serve which must be in bounds 80-90% of the time. It is meant to make sure the ball is put in play but allows the opponents a chance of making a bad pass.

2.Your ferocious hard, topspin serve should still be 60% or better. There are only a few situations where you should consider using it. NEVER in a close game, whether you're ahead or behind. Seldom when you're way ahead, since that comes across as unsportsmanlike and non-Christian. NEVER right after your team has invested heroic effort into getting a sideout. NEVER when your team is presently playing well and just getting bad breaks. This only leaves the circumstance of being in the desperate situation of being far behind in a game where your team's spirit has been (temporarily) broken. In this desperation situation, a ferocious serve to try to get an ace could be your team's best hope. If you fail, your team was probably going to get snuffed anyway. If you DO get a couple aces, hopefully the team optimism returns which should enable ensuing team play, so you should go back to your normal serve rather than rolling the dice again. This is true even if you are still well behind. After all, you must get the ball in play to score points.

3.If you have total confidence in your team's play (compared to the opponents), knowing that we will prevail in any extended rally, you can use a creampuff (dead-ball, non-rotating) lob serve (98% or better). The lack of ball rotation (less than one-half rotation by the time the ball crosses the net) can cause some quirky jumps in the ball. And it gives your team a chance to win the play".

Lagooners lead just For Fun in Rocball

                By Roselyn B. Monroyo
                Variety News Staff

THE Lagooners inch closer to their fourth win leading the Just For Fun in their game in the 2005 WOR League (World Organized Rocball High School League), which resumed yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym yesterday.

After a month-long break, the Lagooners showed little sluggishness drawing first blood in their game with a 15-8 victory in the opening set.

The Lagooners continued to pile up points in the second set winning by 10 markers, 16-10.

Just For Fun recovered a bit in the third set taking a slim one-point lead, 8-7.

The game was interrupted, as students needed to go back to their classes. Rocball games are played during lunch breaks. The Lagooners-Just For Fun match resumes today.

The Lagooners? Tito Francisco will serve on the resumption of their game.

With their victories in the first two sets, the Lagooners are enjoying a 16-point lead over Just For Fun, 38-22, entering the second phase of the third set.

Just for Fun needs to win the last two sets to send the game into o-kon (overtime). If it prevails in the last two sets and holds the lead after four sets, Just for Fun can claim the victory.

Winning against the Lagooners is crucial for Just For Fun, which has only two victories in five games and is in danger of being eliminated.
Only the top four teams after the seven-round regular season will advance to the playoffs. The four teams that make the playoffs will then play in the knockout semifinals with the No. 1 team meeting the No. 4 team for the first finals slot and the No. 2 and 3 squads fighting for the last finals berth.

Just For Fun (3-2) is currently in sixth place in the team standings, while the Lagooners are in good shape for the playoffs as they occupy the No. 3 spot behind league leading Mwaliyas (6-0) and Ochobu (4-1).

Typhoon Saito is leading the Lagooners? attack with 12 points on six aces. Francisco has done a good supporting job for Saito as the former has contributed 10 points on two aces, two kees and a xunx.

Joemar Tumaquip and Anirut Tebuteb are trying to keep Just for Fun afloat as they combined for eight points. They have scored two aces each.

So far, 14 aces, five kees and one xunk have been registered in the match. No team has yet scored a goal.

Yamada regains top hitter's spot & Lagooners beat Just fo Fun

                  Friday, January 13, 2006

After a month-long break, action in the World Organized Rocball High School League resumed at the Marianas High School Gymnasium, with the Lagooners showing no signs of rust with a convincing victory over Just For Fun yesterday.

The Lagooners played well and won three of the four sets, including the fourth set that enabled them to juice out with a 58-36 win. The win is the fourth in six games for the Lagooners, who currently sit in third place in the team standings, only behind defending champion Mwaliyas and Ochobu.

The match got underway on Wednesday, with the Lagooners taking the early advantage via power hitting and miscues by Just For Fun at the service line. The Lagooners also had problems from behind the service line, which erased two points from their score at the start of the set, but recovered, serve well from then on, and scored six two-pointers to streak to a 15-8 win.

Unfortunately for Just For Fun, the Lagooners were just getting started as Tito Francisco and company continued to pound the ball with their might and dominated the second set. With everything going their way, the Lagooners moved into solid position with a 16-6 win, increasing their lead in the overall point tally to 17 points, 31-14.

Just For Fun finally put up a strong fight in the third set, which was interrupted after time expired.

The two teams returned yesterday and Just For Fun turned the tables as the team stunned the Lagooners with a stronger charge and took the set, 16-11, cutting the deficit to 12 points, 30-42.

Determined to pull their record to the .500 mark, Just For Fun tried to win the fourth set and send the match into o-kon, however, it did not have enough juice to pull off the feat as the Lagooners returned to their dominating ways and sealed the deal with a 16-6 clincher.

Tito Francisco and Typhoon Saito were hot all match long and finished as co-heavy hitters for the game by leading the Lagooners with 14 points apiece. Francisco had two aces, two xunks, and three kees, while Saito worked up a whopping seven aces and a kee.

Anirut Tebuteb led Just For Fun with six points on two aces and a kee.

Rocball action returns on Tuesday as Ochobu and Caropinos close out round six of the regular season. Ochobu looks to move just a game behind Mwaliyas in the pennant race with a 4-1 record, while the Caropinos are aiming for their first win of the season.

Meanwhile, Rocball creator Jim Feger disclosed that Shane Yamada of Mwaliyas has regained the top spot for Rocball Heavy Hitter with a total of 79 points. The multi-sport athlete is one big reason why Mwaliyas holds a perfect 6-0 win-loss record as he has connected for a jam, an incredible 15 aces, three xunks, 12 kees, and sox goals to lead the league in scoring.

Right behind Yamada is Oleai smacker Myron Laniyo of B-n-S, who trails by a mere two points in the scoring race. Laniyo has a jam, 13 aces, two xunks, a goal, and has smoked up 20 kees for 77 points.

The race expects to get tighter as Yamada and Laniyo both have one game remaining in the regular season.

                    Ochobu stays in pennant race

                    Thursday, January 19, 2006

Ochobu completed what they started two days ago and managed to defeat Caropinos, 68-33, to close the sixth round of the ongoing 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League.

Ochobu, however, had to fight back after giving the Caropinos new life yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. The still-winless Caropinos entered the game down by 23 points, 24-47, after three sets of play and had to win the fourth set to force overtime.

Determined to jump into the win column, the Caropinos played hard and matched their opponents before pushing the right buttons to force o-kon with a nail-biting 16-15 win. Highlighting the charge was Matthew Iguel, who pounded the ball for a three point goal.

The Caropinos still had a lot of work to do as they still trailed, 30-62, after regulation, which meant the team had to win two overtime sets while Ochobu only had to win one.

The Caropinos looked to make the best of their new life and kept the pressure on in the first o-kon set. The team, however, experienced a mishap on serve but was still tied, 3-3, with Ochobu when lighting struck.

Just when it seemed Caropinos was building momentum, Ochobu's Anip Tisa put an end to their push with one blow as he unleashed a bullet that was good for a goal to end the match and clench the win.

O-kon sets are won by the first team in service to reach 10 points or to score a goal.

As reported earlier, Ochobu edge the Caropinos 16-11 in the first set, then followed by dominating the second set for a 15-3 win to increase their lead to 31-14. Ochobu then won the third set with a 16-10 win.

Anip Tisa finished as the game's heavy hitter as he led Ochobu with 15 points after hitting two aces, a xunk, three kees, and a goal, while David Tisa supported well with an ace and four kees for 10 points.

Mathew Iguel led Caropinos with 13 points after going off for four aces, a kee, and a goal.

With the win, Ochobu (5-1) remains just a game behind defending champion Mwaliyas, which has won all its six games. The two are scheduled to meet in the final game of the regular season on Jan. 30, with the winner taking the pennant crown.

High school Rocball action continues today with Black Magic taking on B-n-S at 11:30pm. Both teams are tied in fourth place on the team standings with 3-3 records

Brothers and Sisters kept their playoff bid alive after juicing out Malat, 65-29, in the seventh and last round of the regular season of the 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

B n S finished the regular season with a 4-3 record tying the Black Magic for the No. 4 spot. The two teams will meet in a do-or-die game for the fourth and last playoffs berth after the last game in the regular season.8)

The Black Magic ended the regular season with a win by forfeiture against Just For Fun.

Three teams, the league-leading Mwaliyas, Ochobu and the Lagooners are already assured of spots in the next round even if they lose their last games.

The Mwaliyas are holding an impressive 6-0 record and could nail the pennant championships if they prevail against Ochobu today. Ochobu is in second place with a 5-1 slate and if it wins against the Mwaliyas, it will force a playoff for the pennant title.ft:

The Lagooners are in the No. 3 spot with a 4-2 record and hope to remain in that spot with a win against the Caropinos in the last game of the regular season tomorrow.

In the playoffs, the No. 1 team meets the No. 4 team for the first finals slot, while the No. 2 and No. 3 squads square off for the last championship berth. The winners will advance to the best-of-three finals.

The Caropinos, who are winless in six games, are already out of contention, along with Malat (1-6) and Just For Fun (2-5).

Myron Laniyo led Brothers and Sisters? crucial win scoring 16 points. He was the game?s heavy hitter as he nailed six aces and two kees.

B n S started strong in the match claiming a 17-3 victory in the first set and grabbed back-to-back set wins after prevailing in the second set, 15-4.

Malat gave B n S quite a good fight in the third set with Julian Fitial nailing the only goal in the game. But it was not enough to give Malat a victory, as B n S escaped with a 17-10 triumph.

B n S foiled Malat?s attempt to send the game into overtime as the former pulled off a 16-12 win in the fourth set for a juiced out victory.

B n S made 13 aces, three xunxs and seven kees in the match, while Malat had four aces, two kees, a xunx and a goal.

Defending champion Mwaliyas put their undefeated record on the line today against current No. 2 Ochobu as the two teams clash to determine who will win the pennant of the World Organized Rocball High School League.

Mwaliyas, which has won all six regular season games, can secure the pennant with a win at the Marianas High School Gymnasium, while Ochobu can force a one-game playoff if they come out on top. Ochobu is just one game behind Mwaliyas in the team standings with a 5-1 win-loss record.8)

Game time is set at 11:30am and the bout is expected to conclude tomorrow.

If Mwaliyas win, the team will face the winner of the one-game playoff between B-n-S and Black Magic, who are tied in fourth place with 4-3 records.

Black Magic and B-n-S will play their playoff on Wednesday.

Rocball creator Jim Feger had earlier announced that only four teams will advance to the playoffs, which will begin sometime next month.

Feger said that if Ochobu beats Mwaliyas and are tied in the team standings, they will also have to play a one-game playoff to determine who will be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

"I'll be off island so if Ochobu wins, their one-game playoff will be held when I get back next month," Feger said.

Already securing the No. 3 spot are the Lagooners players, who will face the loser of the Mwaliyas-Ochobu bout

The quarterset rules of play: There are four sets per game. A team wins a game by outscoring their opponents in total points scored for all four sets, plus the winning team must win the fourth set. A team cannot win a regular game in a losing set.

On the coin flip, the winner always chooses to serve because the receiving team only has two hits off a served ball and three hits for volley. The service team has a five hit option after the serve.ft:

The fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in the 2005-2006 World Organized Rocball League was intense yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium as Black Magic and B-n-S will have to settle their match in o-kon.

With the loser being eliminated from further action, both teams played their hearts out and were separated by just one point after regulation, with Black Magic leading 65-64.

Black Magic led heading into the fourth set but was not able to close out the match as the B-n-S players pushed the best they could to win the set and force overtime.

In Rocball, the team trailing after three sets can force overtime by winning the fourth set, even if they still trail in the overall tally.

The match was intense from the start as the two teams were neck and neck and matched each other well. Dior Jones and Julius Saito knocked in a couple of kees, giving Black Magic just enough firepower to take the first set, 17-16.

Black Magic was able to pad their lead as Jones connected for a goal to highlight a 16-11 victory. With the win, Black Magic led by six points, 33-27.

Jones was able to pound the ball for another goal in the third set. However, an ace by Kaleo Olaitiman and hard hits by Myron Laniyo proved to be enough for B-n-S to inch closer with a 19-16 victory. At that point, B-n-S trailed by just three points, 46-49.

It was anybody's ballgame as B-n-S still had a shot at closing the match in regulation. The team tried to do so in hopes of earning the playoff ticket, and was able to beat Black Magic, 18-16, but still trailed in the overall tally, 64-65, resulting in overtime.

Had B-n-S won the set by four points, they would've been able to take the match.

Saito currently leads Black Magic with 14 points on five aces and two kees, while Jones has 12 points after hitting three kees and two goals.

Laniyo leads B-n-S with 14 points after knocking in two aces and five kees.

The match resumes at 11:30am today, with Black Magic needing to win just one set to take the match. B-n-S must win both sets to advance.

The teams find themselves in similar ground as the two also battled in o-kon last December.

During the bout, Jones was able to lift his team as he connected for a goal in the first o-kon set.

THE Black Magic caught the last bus to the playoffs of the 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League nosing out Brothers and Sisters in o-kon, 75-69, last Monday at the MHS Gym.
Dior Jones led Black Magic?s crucial victory scoring 18 points on two goals, five kees and an ace.

The Black Magic and B n S battled for the last playoff berth as they ended the regular season with identical 4-3 records.

The first four sets of the playoff game were played last Thursday and despite the Black Magic leading by a point after the regulation, 65-64, the two teams were forced to play in overtime as B n S prevailed in the fourth set, 18-16.

Rocball rules state that a leading team can only claim a victory if it wins the fourth set. If it falters, the match goes into o-kon with the leading team needing only a set win or a goal on the first serve, while the trailing squad must prevail in two sets.

The Black Magic took the opening set, 17-16 and scored a 33-27 lead, after claiming the second set, 16-11.
But B n S bounced back in the third, 19-16, and sent the game into overtime with an 18-16 triumph in the fourth set.

The Black Magic made sure there would be no second set o-kon, as Jones capped his impressive performance in the match converting on two kees in o-kon to lead his team to an important win.
Jones was the game?s heavy hitter, followed by Juluis Saito, who had 14 points on five aces and two kees.

Myron Laniyo, the top heavy hitter in the regular season with 91 points edging the Mwaliyas? Shane Yamada (90 pts.), led B n S with 14 markers on five kees and two ace.

The Black Magic will face the top seed and pennant champion Mwaliyas in the best-of-three sets semifinal game. The other semis pairing will feature the Ochobu and the Lagooners.

The winners of the semifinal matches will advance to the best-of-five sets championship game.

The date of the playoff games will be announced later as Rocball creator Jim Feger is off island and will not be back until Feb. 15.

                                8) Meanwhile, Feger received an inquiry from Rocball Federation of India regarding the possible holding of workshops and exhibition games on Saipan.

Dr.M. Kr. Agarwal, secretary general of the federation, said they are interested in sending their national team for a series of friendly matches and clinics to the commonwealth.

Feger said he is open to the idea and would respond to Agarwal?s inquiry once he gets back from the mainland.
