quick question i have an 18-55 lens which came with the nikon camera on a few threads on flickr every raves about the 18-50 lens (which you have to auto focus on the d40) Does the 5mm make such a big difference?

Dunno Rob I'm afraid, have to wait 'til one of the experts show up!

        Lovely animal portraits Marty.

Guys, where do you get that lens for ?80 (EDIT: s'ok, found the lens here) and what would you recommend it for (what kind of shots)?
The lens is good for portrait work and general telephoto stuff.

It wouldn't be so suitable for fast sports or low light photography as the lens is quite slow, but, when there's a decent level of light, and with the lens stopped down a bit, you can get the sort of nice sharp shots I've posted above. The best feature of the lens is the nice bokeh.

It's a cheap consumer lens, so don't expect it to take too many knocks or weather, but for ?80 it's a bargain.

I'm not quite sure which Nikon lens you're refering to. There isn't a current lens that covers 18-50 from Nikon. Are you talking about the Sigma F2.8 18-50mm?

However, an extra 5mm won't make any significant difference, quality of the glass, lens speed, focal range, bokeh would be more worthwhile looking at.

'fraid not. Its a building in Bedford about to be demolished. I've had the shot in mind for a while, just been waiting for the right moment (i.e. to get my finger out and take it!).

I like the Gibbon Marty. Love the way his face pops out

I'll have to see if I can snap a shot (Camera phone) of the Birds Eye building, I'm up that way on Thursday - it really looks very much like it.

And one more. The original just wasn't working for me, so gave it some heavy processing to make it more interesting.

I'm not sure why but this next shot really reminded me of the Clash's London's Calling album cover:

Although having rechecked that album cover it's nothing like it! But I still like the shot

These guys are the UK distributors for M-Rock camera cases. They look pretty good. I've just ordered the Niagara for my Panny vidcam so I'll let you know what it's like. They are on ebay too as xpedia-outlet.
