Can anyone offer any advice on this?

Someone has approached me through Flickr asking if it's OK to paint their own version of one of my shots. It is clear from his page that he is a professional/semi-professional artist and I was wondering what the deal is if he sells the painting of my shot? I was just going to ask him to credit it in someway to me if he puts it online anywhere but was wondering if he should solely profit from the image if he comes to sell it? I'm not actually that bothered in money making but as all my images are copyrighted to me it just seems right.

First off I'm just pleased he's actually asked permission! If this sort of thing is common and the photographer gets no accreditation that's also fine by me, I'll still let him paint it.

3 posts in a row is bad news

Anyway, I've uploaded some more to Flickr. More birds from a trip to Wakehurst earlier in the week. Best are probably:

Go to my Flickr page to see them all large. EDIT: Or click the small shots

That guy that wants to paint my shot does want to sell it afterwards by the way!!

I admit it's not as picturesque as the pictures already posted, but I still think it's pretty decent. I took it a taken a couple of years ago at the small airport near arundel (I think ). I would go and check exactly where it was but I've got to go out and I'm already running late

That's a pretty cool shot. It's Shoreham airport. I guess you went to one of the airshows they hold there. The building in the background is the Lancing College Chapel, it's pretty imposing.

Maybe you could crop the image to just above the planes and just below the line of the hills? Might focus the image on the interesting points more?

EDIT - I hope you don't mind me having a play with your image Malavon but maybe something like this attachment?

One of the creative commons licences (that you can access on flickr) covers exactly this. I know this because I used some piccies off of WikiPedia for my own website that were covered by that license. I was free to use them as long as I credited the author - which I did happily as they were excellent photos.

I emailed him to let him know and was somewhat surprised by his response - he was very grateful that I'd asked his permission and said I was the first who had credited him despite them being used in two well known (and popular round these parts) publications.

Though I haven't got a Macro lens for my 350d, I have been playing with some magnifying filters - they obviously aren't fantastic but they have been good to practice. Very tempted to buy myself a nice macro now, having quite a bit of fun

Here is one of my darts - old flights, natch - more damage on them!

edit - lol, sorry about the size...fixed! Added t'nuver.

Ah yeah, that was it There may have been a show yeah, but the reason for us going is my brother was having a sort of flying lesson as a birthday present, and we all went along and made it into a day out. They just happened to be flying past when I had the camera out

lol, nah I don't mind. You're right though, it does look considerably better. Nice pictures by the way

A few more macro shots of darts

If you hadn't guessed, my 'homework' for my photography course is macro shooting! Any tips or suggestions? I've not done macro work before and not entirely sure on the 'rules'.

Check out the Bokeh group on flickr for cool macro stuff (and there's the Closer and Closer group too). There's some hints and tips in there discussion boards and some excellent photos in the pools.

Thanks for the info Ish, have read up on it on Flickr and the Creative Commons page. As it stands right now I have got the photo as 'all rights reserved' so the guy by rights shouldn't copy, alter, interpret, display or distribute by work in any way. I have however given him permission (by email) to paint his own version already but it's the money making I feel slightly sceptical about.

What if he goes on to sell a thousand prints of his interpretation of my work? I'd get nothing, maybe I should ask for a percentage?

I don't know all that much about macro work either but I'd put all the skill down to getting the right depth of field for the effect you are after, this I believe is controlled by the aperture value. Also when working with such small variables of focus I guess a tripod and some good lighting will help so you don't move that mm that causes the shot to focus in the wrong place.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me of macros will be along to offer better advice soon.

                          Cheers, some awesome shots there

Any recommendations on lenses? A lot of stuff is blocked at work and I'm bored! Have been looking at this for a while - tis a bit pricey but I want something that gives good results...

Its a good lens Pete, i'm after the 100mm version, though some say the 60mm is better (problem is i can't use EF-S Lenses). You might want to have a look at www.bhphoto.com in New York, they ship to the UK as well. The lens i want is ?150 cheaper (before shipping and import duty).

Nothing of mine here but a nice photography link http://interact10ways.com/usa/inform...nteractive.htm

/edit Btw Pete, Canon are running a promotion on that lens (http://canonextrapromotion.onlinerebates.com/intro.aspx) You can get ?35 cash back if you apply for the voucher book. I have a spare voucher for that lens if theres any problems, but you should be able to order a book. PM me if you need it

                              Cheers.
Now that you mention it, I do have a voucher book somewhere!

I picked up Digital Camera Managazine yesterday which has a feature on Macro shooting, plus a review of various lenses. The 100mm canon lens comes out well, but the 90mm Tamron lens comes out top as it is cheaper. jessops link. It doesn't look particularly well built (they say it is actually quite sturdy), but the lower cost is appealing!
I've not actually been able to find the 100mm canon lens anywhere.

This weekends effort. A combination of piss poor weather (rain) and hangover meant I decided to stay indoors.

Spent quite a bit of time with the aperture and shutter speed settings on this. On "auto" the camera blurred the rook too much. With the aperture at its widest I could get both piecees really clear but that didn't look right and I was aiming for a slight blur on the rook anyway. Played around until it came out like this.

Its not the worlds greatest picture but I learnt quite a lot about my camera while doing it.
