Aye, many of the point and shoot cameras can do some very close-up macro work - my Olympus C2020 can get closer than I can with the lenses I currently have on my D50.

Well I caved and bought a Nikon AF Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D Micro Lens before pay day after doing a bit of reading around. Also bought myself a Nikon 70-300 lens to replace (I hope!) the 18-55mm kit lens I have. Not expecting anything sensational from the latter as it was only cheap but looking forward to trying both out.

Hopefully will be here this week in time for the weekend!

      I blame you PeteJ

Is it the 'G' lens with no aperture or the 'standard' type with aperture ring.

I have one of the latter and it's quite good though like a lot of the consumer Nikon lenses and perhaps Canon too there can be a bit of variation between them.

For example I have the 18-35 Nikkor also and I got a bad one as it suffers from horrendous lens flare.
As long as it is pitch black it takes great pics
Ideal for up here in the Manchester area where we don't see the sun that often

Its the G with no aperture ring. I'm not expecting "great" things from it but hopefully it will be a useful lens at the price!

The macro lens on the other hand I am expecting the earth from - allowing for my skill (or lack thereof!) of course

            Played

Almost got an awesome shot a dog earlier which was in the car infront (open top), by the time I realised how gormless it was and pulled my camera out they were just turning off so the result is out of focus. Such a shame!

I presume a lens without an Aperture ring means you cannot adjust the aperture setting on the lens, right? So what would be the benefit of having a lens without that adjustment? Sorry to sound like a photography n00b, but.. well I am

It's set via the camera instead. Some people don't like that, personally I don't care either way, though I find it easier setting it via the dial wheel on the camera than on the lens itself.

                        That's an excellent effect!

How long was the exposure and how dark was the room?

For those thinking of buying a DSLR, the decision making process has just become more difficult as Sony have announced their new Alpha series of cameras.

The A100 will have a 10MP sensor, IS and anti dust built into the body, and will be fully compatible with most of the Konica-Minolta Maxxum lenses.

I assume they are going after the big two, Canon and Nikon, for the entry level, so price wise it will be up against the 350D and the D50 , but with those kind of specs it should frighten the Canon 30D and Nikon D200.

A strange spot in the garden yesterday:

                              Mating Moths

Not a note worthy picture but strange all the same, these guys were monsters

Seen all the papers this morning? The guy that got the Rooney shot that has made every single front or back page must be over the moon with himself, and hopefully rich, but probably just made the agency he works for a fortune.

That light painting is very interesting, often wondered how to do it, may give it a go, what does "camera set on Bulb" mean GT?

Bulb is when you leave the shutter open for any length of time, usually by holding down or locking your cable release.

Most professional cameras go up to 4 seconds, and then B (Bulb).
