I'm nowhere near as handy with a camera as you lot, but these recent ones I took turned out not too bad.

I don't mean to stink up this thread with my Lego but I quite liked this photo below. Awesome work here, guys. Marty, your stuff in particular is lovely. Love the classic cars Ikobo. Yamuko, you make me regret not going to Japan all the more.

Anyway, here's the dark lord taken with an iPad of all things and then effected up (or down)...

Greatest city in the world mate, I have so many pics from there after 8 visits! Some real nice ones you've posted there too.

Thank you - still looking for that 1st place on APOY though Certainly nothing wrong with using props in your photos, and I'm no snob about having to use a DSLR (it's merely a tool) so photos from an iPad are just as valid.

NYC is definitely a great place for photos, I've been there twice myself - some interesting shots there.

I'm getting tempted to buy a new body, but in order to get an increase in image quality (I want better low light shots) I've got to go for a model with a difference lens mount.

The 5d mark 3 is out, I was super tempted until I realised it has a different lens mount and all the manufacturers seem to be charging loads more for the privilage.

Also had a look at the D7000, which doesn't have the same expensive lens problem but it's a couple of years old now and I'm half expecting a replacement to turn up

What camera is it you have at the moment? The 5D Mk3 has the standard Canon EF mount, same as the 5D Mk1 and 5D Mk2 and the EOS-1D series (most if not all L series glass is EF mount). You can't use the EF-S lenses as they're designed for the APS-C sensors where the 5D models are full frame, and you'll need the better glass for these sensors.

The D7000 is a fabulous camera, I bought one a few months back, though it's likely there'll be a D7100 soon and likely the D300 replacement too. And perhaps the rumoured budget full frame D600 - though again to get the most out of this you'll need better glass.

I've got a 550D at the mo, I was looking at the 650D which has some extra features , but the sensor is probably identical so I won't get the noise reduction I so crave.

The 650D uses the DIGIC 5 which will give you some improvements over DIGIC 4, though you might well be better off getting some L glass instead (or waiting to see what replaces the Canon 7D).

How much after shot alteration must be involved with those? You could have the best phone on the planet and you'd still struggle with taking shots of that standard "out of the box"

My HTC one X has an 8 megapixel and it produces utterly woeful shots, even in the correct conditions!

The One X camera is well regarded in terms of camera phones, I'm surprised you can't get usable shots from it.

This is from my Galaxy S3 without processing ...

You should be able to get similar results with the HTC (click through for the Original (3264 x 2448) version).

Maybe I'm just not using the right settings then. I've taken a few recent purchase photos with it and they all come out with a red tint to them.

I see a few people are reporting a red tint, though photos I've seen on flickr are fine, so it's not affecting everyone. Perhaps it might have some auto white balance issues. I'd try a different camera app to see if it makes a difference, I can recommend giving Camera360 a go.

Just done the old flower test on a hanging basket outside, looks fairly nice after applying an enhancement to it. Will upload it as soon as it arrives in my dropbox folder.

                              Edit:

Nothing except a bit of exposure alteration because I had it set too high when taking the pictures. The phone has a 12MP sensor on it and can take full 1080p video too in the same quality as those photos. **** sound mind you.

Here's a few sample shots from the phone using the default camera app. These shots have NOT been altered in any way at all apart from size reduction.

The phone is a Japanese only Sharp 104SH Android phone.
