Yeah, there's definitely a noticible difference there, it's virtually impossible to make swans totally white given the muck they root around in. I'd still like a bit more, but I guess this is going to be more difficult to achieve without ruining the rest of the shot.

Really do like the composition on this shot.

The is if you up the contrast everything around would look as bright, i suppose careful use(and very tedious use!) of the burn tool on PS might do it.

I've selected the swans in photoshop to make a new layer, so can do pretty much anything with them

There was a huuuuuuuuge error on my behalf when taking the shot which pretty much ruins any chance of printing, and that is...I left it on ISO 1600 from the night before >_< Was so annoyed when I realised!

That really shouldn't ruin the shot - a bit more grainy maybe, but as you've gone B&W on the shot, it's surely something that you'd get away with.

In what way do you think you've ruined it?

That is the reason why I decided not to buy any EF-S lenses for my new 30D. The time will come when a consumer FF frame camera is affordable, thus my lenses will still have some use.
I'm sure there will at some point but just wondering on what resolution it would be.

I remember reading somewhere a 'problem' with Canon's first FF DSLR in that a few of the reviewers were finding edge softness in the test pictures they were taking.
After reporting this to Canon, they were asked which lenses were being used, apparently all were using the consumer Canon lenses as opposed to the high end more expensive ones.
This was the problem, Canon advised that only the pro lenses should be used, the journo's then revisited their test locations with pro glass and lo and behold the shots were all edge to edge sharp.
The reason being that the CCD sensor was actually going beyond the resolution of the cheaper glass being used.

Maybe this is a reason Nikon has stayed with the APS sized sensor - who knows.

For me I would prefer something in the middle, say a 1.2 factor mag, giving an increase for your tele's but not so punishing on your wideangles.

I'm always doing that. I sometimes wonder why i'm getting such a fast shutter speed. Then i remember, usually when i've got home though.

You can see when enlarged the noise is really bad. I'll try printing it tonight and see how it turns out.

I'm always leaving my camera on funny modes - usually I spot it quickly (ie, when it does a 15" exposure when trying to snap a bee), but on Saturday I did over 90 shots before noticing

How do the swans look in plain black and white Pete? I think I'd like that better, is a nicely framed shot though.

Spent a great day at Goodwood on Friday. My Dad is photography mad, and retired, so it was great to have someone on hand who has had the time to read all about the techniques etc. I took over 200 shots and have a usable 21 all on flickr of course!

I feel my 80-200 lens was showing it's limitations unfortunately. Also the lack of tracking focus (what's that called? AI servo) on the 300D was a problem. Panning shots ended up being manual focus affairs and really made me respect the guys that take great motorsport shots all the time, a real skill indeed. Conveying the movement of a car is really hard, it was all to easy to make it look like it's parked on the track. Was raining on and off all day, all shots taken under cloud and most thorugh the rain too, it all added to the challenge!

Here are some clickable versions of the best shots. All settings are listed under the pic on flickr.

                  Laguna Touring Car.

                  Bowler Wildcat.

Mansell in the rain. So hard to expose the black and white car correctly on a very dark part of the track. Result is whites are a little overexposed

                  Nissan Touring Car.

                  Renault F1.

It's worth viewing these large by clicking to see the detail not really shown at this size.

Let me know what you think

Superb focus on these - the wildcat is an excellent shot in particular. They are all very good in fact

Wow. There's some really impressive shots there Agent L.

The wildcat is also my favourite. But as PeteJ says they're all good. Superb even

Enlighten us then! More expensive than an F1 car? I must admit to not being so hot on the older cars. Is it an E-type Jag?
