Tricky one that. Ground in now so don't really know what to suggest. This is why we have clear filters on the front of our SLR lenses.

Check this out, the guy was spamming his youtube vids in threads in the Brighton Flickr group and after my ill thought out (but from the heart) reply it all got a bit out of hand:

I noticed a spot on the lens today and swiftly went and got a lens cleaning cloth, wiped it and managed to just smear it across the lens even more rather than removing it, it now won't come off by wiping with a cloth alone
I've always used a cloth that I had for my glasses to clean the lens. A friend of mine bought a cleaning cloth from Jessops the other day, and it didn't feel that good. Pop down to an opticians and see if you can find a very fine and soft cloth. Mine cost about 50p I think.

            Well, some of us do

Owning 3 lens with 77mm threads did put me off buying filters. So now, all mine are bare!

Tommy, echo what has been said above. Get a lens cloth, much better than using tissue/coats/small rodents.

Lots of LOLZ there then, well done for keeping you're cool and being the 'bigger' man, but all's well that ends well eh

Great minds think alike GT I managed to remove the smudge using a glasses cleaning cloth and my hot breath, so i'm back in business and tonight I played with an old tap, the light from my phone camera and water....

Quite happy with some of those, the G9 is a great little camera!

              Long may the experimenting continue

You'll cry if you ever scratch or crack a front element - UV filters protect expensive glass For the sake of a tenner I reckon you're opening yourself up to a world of pain.

Your shots are superb Tommy, you seem to be a natural with the camera.

I took my Nikon down the beach yesterday, I'll see if any are worth uploading later.

Be kind, these are some of the first shots with the D40. I'm a bit overawed with the options and possibilities available to me now.

                      I welcome all constructive criticism

Some awesome shots. TommyG - you really seem to have the eye for it

Much annoyance last night. I arrived in Eastbourne (with work) just as the light was perfect for an awesome pier shot but had no opportunity to stop and take pictures.

                        The hotel smelled of mothballs.

Problem with filters is if they break, they can scratch the front element anyway. I know of someone it happened too. Also with a £600 lens sticking a £10 bit of glass will degrade the image (and possibly have an effect on autofocus in certain light conditions). Personally I think the lens hood offers just as good protection for the front element. I have scratched the front of my 70-200 slightly though. This was when I stuck it though a fence to get a shot. My fault for being daft, still the scratch is off centre so doesn't show up.

This image (not mine) shows another downside for filters.

Thanks for all the encouraging feedback guys, it?s greatly appreciated and just makes me want to take more pics

Great shots Herbaliser, I love macro shots and the tree stump one is great, also love the layout of the beach shot, not sure what the egg looking one is though as the pics a bit small, if you click on your own photo in flickr then once the image opens up bigger on the next page, right click goto properties and copy and paste the image url from there (at least that?s what I do, I??m sure there?s an easier way though) it'll appear bigger for us to see

Had Uni today, we?re very fortunate to have our school set in some beautiful surroundings, there are horses in the fields which are great to watch if the lesson is getting too much?

I also got a few portrait shots today, people are so much more interesting to take photos off, capturing human emotion is wonderful.

Still playing with my manual settings and thought it would be cool to see if I could freeze a ping pong ball in mid air? managed to capture it dead centre?. Sweet!

and this is old Billy, post op' bless him, still smiling

This is a bigger version of the strange looking shot. Its olive oil and grated orange rind. My wife was making tea at the time.
