    No?

Is there any way of taking scenery shots at night with a compact digital without using a tripod? Seems to me that as soon as the flash is turned off, the IS goes with it and you just end up with a burred mess. Upping the ISO makes the quality awful. There must be some kind of compromise, surely?

Great stuff on getting a camera mate - the Canon Powershot range is pretty good from what I've read. I look forward to seeing your results posted up here soon!

As for the Lithium battery question, the general consensus does seem to be that they do last longer than their alkaline counterparts. Wikipedia has this to say:

The heavy electrical demands of many of these devices make lithium batteries a particularly attractive option. In particular, lithium batteries can easily support the brief, heavy current demands of devices such as digital cameras, and they maintain a higher voltage for a longer period than alkaline cells.
I don't know that there is a compromise with compacts when taking scenery shots at night. But tripods are not expensive so maybe look into grabbing one off of Ebay?

      Hope this helps mate

        Cheers, dude.

I'll certainly post up any shots that turn out well. I really haven't got a clue what I'm doing but I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I go on holiday in five weeks.

When I had my compact I'd use the self-timer button and balance the camera on a wall (or other suitable flat surface) for low light shots.

Here's an example from a holiday in Greece using that method:

That looks excellent, what was the shutter speed set to?

Picked up the camera again yesterday, although with bad light and not much subject indoors, I took a few candle shots. Nothing special, it's just nice to play with it again...roll on the summer

I'm with you Tommy, we need some sunshine so we can all get back out there! Loving the blind shot and the second candle photo - nice work

Hey Boris, is that third photo your house?! That second shot is really nice

In other news, at the weekend, I'll have a Nikon D70 hand-me-down in excellent condition, along with accessories including two lenses (Nikon 18-70 lens and the very nice Nikon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 too). I'm probably gonna just pop it on Ebay unless anyone here would be interested. PM me if you are as then I can put it in the Non-Gaming for sale thread.

Mods - I hope the above is ok? I'm not trying to sell it from this thread, I just wanted to see if anyone here would be interested in it before selling elsewhere.

I've quickly stuck my Snowboarding photos up here:

I've done nothing to them yet other than default raw conversion + resize but all this talk of roll on summer I thought it's be nice to see a few sunny day shots (it was snowing almost all the time but the Wednesday gave us a short break so there are a few sunny days shots in there).

Yeah, that's the one I live in at the weekends, my other is a bit more bigger.

                          They're all brilliant though.

We tried a few with the action setting yesterday but it was a bit hit and miss.

                            Thanks

Here's some shots of mine taken yesterday at the beautiful Scotney Castle, Lamberhurst, Kent:

I have this boat house shot in black and white too, if anyone is interested in seeing that?)

It was really nice to get out in the sun and take some shots again. Now that the weather is picking up a bit, hopefully this thread will come back to life a little more now

Hi Dan, looks like a lovely place for photos. I particularly like the boat house one, plus there's another on your flickr (14?) that I like as well - looks like you've done something with the PP on that one ?

Were these with the new lens ?

I haven't been out for a while and won't be for a few weeks yet as I am recovering from a knee op from last week - just as the blue skies come back as well..
