Pete, If your looking a flash make sure it an SpeedLite EX not EZ. The EX series work fine with Canon Digital. EZ flash will work, but only manual. I'd personally avoid the basic 220EX as it's nothing more than a more powerful flash.

The 420/430EX (and the 550/580EX) has the ability to swivel and tilt the head to bounce the flash of a different surface (reduces harsh flash).

My model, the 380EX is o.k. except there's not much in the way of control on the flash itself and its doesn't swivel (tilt only).

Newer models have a few options to set flash exposure compensation and 2nd curtain sync. Also they can be used remotely via a transmitter (at additional cost of course!).

    Gareth,

nice beach shots, where is it?
Cheers for the advice - it's this one I was after http://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...roducts_id=173

Yet another discovery on flickr that so many people are ignorant of high key photography :/

I might be going for that one myself! Much better than my 380EX (o.k. it is 10 years old) and i think it was around the same price.

Marty, never underestimate the stupidity of the public.

Nice shots of Exeter Lesley - believe it or not I've lived down here all my life and never taken my camera around the city! Actually that's a lie, I bought it from Exeter

Marty - it seems the Hit, Miss, Maybe group hates you, I've never seen so many good shots get 'Maybe' ratings! The Judgement group has made better comments. I found with some of my images that you have to write exactly what you meant to do for people to understand - they have no imagination

Puss in boots comment is particularly stupid - "the back ground is too white and not enough contrast" - it's just pure ignorance - that's exactly what high key lighting is. Duh!

                  Comment

Aye that was a stupid thing to say - incidently, how did you manage that background?

                    Comment

Not everyone needs to fully understand the technical aspect of a photo guys, flickr isn't exclusively the hang out of pro photographers or even talented photographers. If you enter your shot into a rating group expect honest replies.

I'm not too hot on the technicalities of high key shooting but I know I don't particularly like it. While it may be technically very adept I would rate it on whether or not I like the image in front of me, a maybe in this case, and I would say why. I can appreciate the effort gone into getting such a shot but it doesn't mean I or anyone else are going to score it positively.

I'm not referring to your leaves now Marty but the most boring image in the world can be captured perfectly from a tech point of view and I'll still rate it as **** if that's what I see.

You should maybe just stick to the high key pools. I find HMM to be a stupid, uneducated group anyway, HMM..Why is often better. It's too dependant on who posts a shot straight after you as well, in your case idiots it seems that can't even read the title.

I may try to take some shots at Gay Pride tomorrow, always a colourful event if a little crowded and hard to get good angles. Might also go out at dusk to try some long exposures as Melissa is away and I've got the whole w/e to do whatever I want!

Hi, can anyone recommend me a sub ?100 digital camera from somewhere like Argos or online?

I know I won't get perfect results with this budget but would like to take some nice closeups and preferably have a decent flash as I've seen some horrible dark photos with Digital Cameras.

                        ta!

                        Comment

You're right of course - just a little irritating that people are criticising the very point of the effect of high key lighting. I think you're right on HMM, it seems rather pointless adding any photos to that group any more, so I'm going to take it off my group list.

I really like the leaf/seed series I'm doing - I think the effect works very well indeed. The subject is placed on a white paper, and I've used diffused flash to light it. Then B&W filtered, reduced the midtones and hightones slightly.

                            I think I will too.

And at the end of the day that's all that matters isn't it, keep doing what YOU want to people

I luv looking at all the artistic snaps you guys do! its great! Is it frowned upon to touch up shots you do in photoshop? i mean it loses that purity once its been tainted right?

Alastair, are you AKA Agent L?

Yes mate, previously known as Agent L, changed it a week or so ago.

I post process all my shots in PS. I find they need it to look as good as they can. I like them to be a realistic representation of what I saw though so don't go overboard unless I'm going for a particular effect. My PS skills aren't up to adding in things that aren't there or changing skys etc so I just stick to sharpening, colour levels, contrast and adding a frame.
