great pics, Wilson looks like he is saying "honestly it wasn't me" which given his dodgey past is quite ironic

I took a few of him doing that interview but chose that one as it had a bit of character and attitude rather than just him talking to camera.

Hi guys, I'm new to this thread but I've just won a competition through my work: I entered a caption comp at PA Photos (previously Empics) and won a Nikon D200 with an AF-S DX 18-135mm lens! Some pretty good equipment as far as I can tell, as it just arrived this morning and all looks stunning. I have some learnin' to do now, as I am used to using a compact camera, but I'm determined to make the most of this amazing prize. I've had a little play, but will try to post my efforts on here and would be grateful for your critique and tips.
Hope to be back here soon

You've discovered depth of field already then Dan! There are some focusing issues on a few of them (4 & 7), may be down to shake if it was bad light causing a slow shutter speed (and zoomed in) though.
3 probably needs a deeper DOF to get all the flowers in focus rather than the bottom right one.
Composition and framing you'll learn more about as you go along and shoot more.

First thought - post smaller pics via flickr with links to the original - it's easier on the forum. I generally link mediums.
The compositions seem thought out, but need a bit of tweaking, you get a feel for this the more you take. What I can't understand why they're all looking so soft though with that lens. What settings have you set on the camera?Last edited by MartyG; 06-06-2007, 21:19.

Thanks for your thoughts guys although I should point out that I really am a complete novice and appreciate it if you could talk to me as I know nothingbecause that's about the strength of my knowledge at the moment.
What composition do you mean (see, I know nothing...like Manuel!)? My choice of subject to shoot?
Focus problems probably due to the cat moving around! Don't know why on the other one.
Depth of field - is that when the forward object is in focus and the rear one(s) is/are not, or vice versa?
As for my settings: ISO is at 400, White balance is on automatic and I'm not sure about the Program settings - don't really know what they are, or mean yet, so all advice will be graciously appreciated. By the way, what do you mean when you say the photos are 'so soft'.
I am sponge ready to be soaked in the fountain of your wisdom (eww)
