This shot, this shot and this shot just blew me away. How do you capture stuff like this? It's beyond me.

Great stuff. The first one is a pretty straightforward sunset shot, albeit a very original setup, where the low sun is lighting the spray over the wall thing.

The second confuses me somewhat, capturing rain is pretty damn hard and seeing as he works in the visual graphics (motion) industry I'd hazard a guess that some of the shots have had a lot of work. This shot has lots of halos where it's either been HDR'd or layered for the different exposures. Still great work though

He also gets the advantage of living in a wonderful part of the world where the light is a whole lot more interesting than it is in the UK.

Anyone know any good sources for photoshop actions? Free would help. Specifically looking for things such as adding a polaroid frame, maybe a through the viewfinder and some other frames.

Alastair, this might be a useful resource.

Apologies for the extreme close up

Thanks for the link GT, found some pretty useful stuff there.

Like the shot too. Don't know if it 'needs' the selective colouring as it may well be striking enough without.

I think it looks excellent, though it looks like you've been a bit messy with the masking tool. The detail in the eyes is fantastic, and I'd be loath to lose the dramatic colours. If I had to criticise it, I'd say it looks a tad gimmicky, but really it's still an excellent image.

The D40X arrived last night Was a little pre-occupied so couldn't experiment too much but I am already a very happy man. Should hopefully be posting some shots in here soon!

                  Ah lucky you.
My new toy hasn't arrived, despite the claim that they will arrive within 1 week of order processing. Checked the shipping help and my order still hasn't shipped I was hoping to have it for Saturday as we are going out walking and wanted to have my new toy for the walk.

Everything else has bloody well arrived too (spare battery, filters, memory card)

Nice one, would like to get an additional body this year but don't know if I can afford it or not.

The father of one of the wife's friends was over at New Year showing off his D300, crikey the LCD screen is huge probably just like on yours.

The one on my S2 Pro is about the size of a postage stamp.

Thanks Al, I was pretty pleased with that set overall actually. I exercised quite a bit of restraint during the editing process this time - I took over 350 shots of the band and ended up with just 30 that pleased me after the cull! I like that shot too...it's very Dracula wouldn't you say!

Ok, I'll bite, c'mon Al....what's your new toy?

Lens, I'm not saying what yet as I have had massive ballache getting it posted. First one got lost and this is the 2nd and it just left it's location this morning. Fingers crossed it actually makes it to me this time and in time for my Scotland road trip 2 weeks today.

I stupidly hadn't backed up anything since November-ish, so I've lost some of the best shots I've ever taken, and some incredibly sendimental ones I can literally never take again. On the plus side, I now have a lot less backlog to process!

So yeah! Don't let it happen to you!
Bit OT, but do you process your shots on your macbook, or do you have a desktop/monitor to hook up to? I'm tempted by a macbook, but I'm worried that the 13" screen is too impractical?

I've processed tons of shots on the screen. I did recently(ish) start using an external monitor, but the 1280 x 800 resolution is plenty for me. It's 13", but you can fit almost as much on there as my 22" (1600x1050), it's just that each pixel is bigger.

Actually, I often take Macbook away from the desk and process my photos elsewhere. It can be a nice change and a bit more relaxing doing it on the couch or whatever.
