Sink the Bismark made it's own stories, that was how legendary it was. From the brown paper bag, to our first tastes on a beer night then me setting up my stripped out Mini shell as a temporary bar for Plough Boy to try.

The Punk IPA was amezzin'. Track it down folks. IPA is without doubt my favourite type of beer.

In which case you need to hunt out Jarrow Brewery's Westoe IPA. Nicest IPA I've had.
You might have some luck in the Bacchus or Bodega.

Thanks for the tip. I'm out in town later in the month so I'll have a look.

            BEER TIME

We're attending the Newcastle Beer Festival tomorrow afternoon.

All-comers welcome. StuM82 is, of course, invited to meet Plough Boy and I, but he's probably trying on girl's blouses in Dorothy Perkins. I think that was his excuse for not attending last year, anyway.

I won't be making the same mistake I made at Norwich, when I hit the heavy boys early doors, but the lack of stomach contents at the early start time will probably thrash me anyway.

Wagons roll, let's get this burbur fest on the road!

I had a kerrrr-azy weekend, last. Went to Amsterdam and tried..... Well...... a LOT.

              Went to the Ij Brewery:
              http://www.xs4all.nl/~patto1ro/amspubs5.htm (2nd pic down)
and had a Pilsner and Triple that were both fresh as a daisy.

Went to a specialist beer shop BierKoning:
http://bierkoning.nl/en/p-r-o-d-u-k-t-e-n/ (dull website but they have 1100 beers for sale!!!!)
Bought BrewDog's IPA is dead 4-pack for 12quid, a FlyingDog IPA, and something dark and sticky from the Mollen Brewery: http://www.brouwerijdemolen.nl/index...beer-shop.html

Went to a ?new? bar called Beer Empire on the Nieuwzijds Voorburgwal:
This place specialises in American craft beer. It had about 25 taps and around 150+ bottles.
I had Flying Dog's Raging Bitch and Gonzo Porter - both on tap... very rare indeed!

              Beat That!

Very nice indeed! Liked the windmill especially.

If I lived in the US I'd be all over the craft beer scene.

Can't believe only 2 of us on this thread keep record books/spreadsheets of beers!

I was reading an interesting thread on a homebrewing forum recently regarding the differences between the British and American scenes.
There were contribution from both sides and I think the general concensus was that the UK is more traditional and the US more experimental.
Companies such as Brewdog in the UK are picking up on the US scene.
There does appear to be a much better level of competition in US but they also have a tendancy to use massive lists of ingredients in singles brews which can sometimes be detrimental.
I'm liking the podcasts from the Brewing Network though which gives an insight into the US scene today.

I'm on the ales tonight. Off into town with a few mates so will see what Wetherspoons have. Hopefully some nice ones.

                        Classic festival japes.

Made all the better by chatting to some bird all afternoon, who was high in the festival fitness stakes. A pretty girl who likes beers? Oh yes.

When I first moved over to this neck of the woods, there was a pub in nearby Lanchester that sold at least 4 guest ales at all times. They also had one or two festivals a year, always well attended. The guvnor was top drawer and once gave me an old Hobgoblin promo poster.

Anyway, a couple of years back, the pub changed hands. Apparently the previous owners were swingers and were drummed out by local outrage. The new owners got rid of the guest ales and had two cask ales on - Landlord and Bombardier. Yawnsville. Needless to say, after I while I went elsewhere to find newbies, only returning every so often.

Today, the missus and I parked at a picnic site about a mile away and walked into Lanchester. Outside the Queen's Head, I almost (literally) walked into a big chalkboard outside. Cursing the damn thing, a couple of names caught my eyes. Three new beers!

I popped in and had halves of Joseph Holt IPA (3.8%), Wm Younger No.3 (4.3%) and Theakston's Lightfoot (4.1%). All nice tasting and well kept. They even had tasting notes in display cases on the bar. I have no idea whether or not the pub has changed hands again, or whether or not the owners have simply seen the light and realised that real ale sales are shooting up nationwide, and that more people demand more choice and quality for their hard-earned these days, but I made a point of telling the wifey behind the bar that I'd walked in because of the beers and I would return frequently if they got more guests in. A bloke sidled up next to her and explained that they'd change every week.

Good news, and a return to form!

Having recently found a pub locally selling Woodfordes Wherry and having brewed this myself from a kit I was pleasantly surprised to find the kit version so much better.
Darker, stronger, better balanced and better flavours. It might have been an average pint but others I was with who tried it rated it well.
Oh and it is nearly ?3 per pint cheaper in kit form
I've started another Wherry and a Fixby Gold then a Linthwaites Light and a Coopers Stout on the beer front.
I may stick a couple of long term wacky Belgian concoctions on too for the autumn.

I've run those kits, all good stuff. The stout needs a good 3 months to mature, best made up with an extra bag or two of medium spray malt.

Yeah that is my plan. What is known as Ditch's stout on some forums. Bumps up the price to the 50p mark but the quality too.
