I did go out tonight. Had a couple of pints of Thwaites Double Century Celebration Ale, a pint of Fullers Chiswick Ale and a pint of Bath Spa (which did actually taste like 2000 year old foot sweat).

Beer of the weekend: Fullers Special London Ale.

Very flavoursome, with a high alcohol content. Despite being a pale ale, it drinks like liquid treacle - in a good way.

A quick trip to the 12th Bhurtpore beer festival (Aston, nr Nantwich, Cheshire) on Saturday resulted in 10 new beers I've not tasted before:

Last night a great tragedy befell the prinny real ale crusade. It has set the movement back weeks.

A trip to see Die Hard 4.0 at Boldon Colliery culminated in a visit to the local hyper-Asda. 3 new beers were found.

Ruddles County (in a new bottle - oooohhhh) - 8
Ridley's Old Bob (popular, I gather, in Essex) - 8

and...

Hook Norton 303AD (a seasonal special).

Upon entering the vanpeebles garden area, the Hook Norton took it upon itself to explode in the carrier bag. I'm positive it didn't bang against anything. After fishing my new copy of Okami out of the froth and fizz(), I happened to inspect the bottle and found the enter bottom inch of the bottle literally cracked off. I'm no bottle scientist, but when I've banged bottles in the past there's usually a little impacted crunched mess of glass where it hit whatever it hit, or if it's a clean break it goes a bit of the way round. Not the whole bloody way!

In order to taste this limited-time beer, we got down on hands and knees and licked it off the ground. heh not really, we dipped our fingers in the frothy carrier bag, only to discover that it tasted superb. It might have been in part due to the inaccessibility of this busted newbie that it tasted so good; like a forbidden fruit; but we both agreed that under any normal circumstances it would have been a good 'un anyway.

The rest of the night was like a solemn soliloquy as pebbles and I muttered rueful epitaphs about the fallen beer to ourselves...

I have cried for many things in life but that right there - *bang* - my heart just felt heavy and my breathing started to slow down for the tears to roll down my cheek.

I hope we can all recover from what is probably the tragedy of the year in any medium.

If it is of any consolation, I managed to have each of the Adnams selections last night - The Bitter, Broadside, Explorer and Regatta - as well as a Woodforde's Wherry to top it off.

Brothers, as much as this disastrous event has befallen upon us and hit us most where it hurts, our hearts, we must move on.

Your condolences are much appreciated. You're right, I must move on, but it's created a scar that'll be there for a while yet.

I discovered a new beer in this north east oasis. Then it got skanked. I feel like a bloke who's found a fifty quid note in the street covered in dog ****.

Oxfordshire White Horse - 8.5 out of 10. Very citrusy, a bit like Wychwood Circlemaster. It had a rather tasteful little kick.

Old Ember again - nice as usual, but quite heavy on the guts.

Badger Golden Glory - superb as usual.

Marston's Firestoker - as above.

No busted bottles to report tonight, boys. Back on track

Being a yorkshire lad tonight i decided to try my first ever bottle of Black Sheep and to be honest i found it a little so so, something about the finish left me a little off. It wasnt the bitterness i just found it to have an odd aftertaste.

To finish of I tried a bottle of Jennings Sneck Lifter which i found much more enjoyable. Nice darkish ale but just the right strength and not overly thick like the Evil Ale known as Centurions Ghost, i swear that stuff is made by the devil.

Best of the bunch was a Brakspear Organic for me last night. Such a quality ale. In fact all of the Brakspear brews I have ever tried have been super quality..... I've still got three bottles of Triple maturing in my garage. They will be 2 years old in December.

Nice to see Sneck Lifter getting a mention. That is a fantastic dark ale - not too overpowering - unlike the Centurion you mention.

They do that on draft at one of the York Brewery pubs in York.
