Weeeee just got an email saying that my company accounts need to be sorted, signed, and with the accountants start of next week, so that they can send it off to HMRC by the end of the week, and I quote...

PLEASE NOTE: Companies House will not accept that accounts are late due
to the proposed postal strikes on 22 and 23 October 2009.

Isn't the strike supposed to start on Thursday though?

Nothing personal, I just view things a little differently since my gf lost her job at the start of the year. She did everything right and on time as she was supposed to but worked for a small business who went under because other small businesses were struggling and didn't bother to pay them. Most of those companies made it through too...

A strike to me is like asking for a reward for not doing your job at all!

Don't like the way GAME are trying to cash in on RM though, doesn't look like they are doing their bit at all, 2 quid off express postage and free delivery on orders over 75 instead of 100... pah!

I think they're doing their bit:
If you are a Reward Card Member and we think your standard delivery order (or preorder) may be affected by official strike action, we will proactively manage your delivery, which may include upgrading it to our courier service free of charge, to give you the best chance of getting your order as soon as possible.

Well I agree with you as I was thinking exactly the same thing. Theyre charging ?1 more than shopto & their prices are immensly higher anyway.

There are still deliverys on thursday, delivery staff are only out on friday.

Reward for striking?? You do realise we wont be paid don't you??

Everyone is losing jobs all over the country, most people don't have a union to back them like we do so most can't fight for their rights in the workplace, over the years companies all across the country have been on strike including banks, councils etc but we seem to get all the stick for trying to protect ourselfs. I'm sorry if your game arrives a day or two late but we're just trying to protect our own futures, a point that most people seem to be missing. We don't want to lose money by striking, we don't get paid that much anyway.

No you read, i'm not moaning about not getting paid!! I'm clearly pointing out to someone else were not getting paid for striking as they mentioned being rewarded for striking.

I'm fully aware how striking works, been in this job too long not to know, i'm prepared to lose money to fight our corner as thats what is has come too i'm afraid.

                      But please read properly

I think a lot of people, spoken to many, think that those on strike still get paid, like a sick day. They don't, which means they are actually making a genuine monetary sacrifice for their futures.
In this case, I support the strike, but they need to explain it better. It is not just a case of having to work, the way that post has been deregulated is hugely unfair, that is what the people on strike should be flagging. They have not introduced fair competition, the transfer price for TNT is clearly not fair, otherwise RM would still be able to make money - they can't. TNT can from the arrangement.

The reason people get made redundant is sometimes for the reason there is not enough work, that is not the case here - here people are being told to work more because the management and government have ****ed up. The government are running a conservative policy (privatise services) and, surprise surprise, services suffer.

Royal Mail is still making money, though. They announced record profits of ?255 million at the beginning of this year, enough to give our Chief Executive Adam Crozier a 26% pay rise and a performance related bonus of ?469,000 for cutting 45,000 jobs, closing nearly 5,000 Post Offices, a reduction in postal services, and for increasing casualisation in the workforce. But they also said that the universal service was still a loss maker, due to a decline in people posting letters and the recession, so the business has to continue with it's programme of modernisation.

Modernisation - what a success story...for some people. Remember the bad old days of two daily deliveries, Sunday and Bank Holiday collections, and you're post arriving before you had to leave for work? Phew, thank god those days are over.

If this industrial action achieves nothing else, I hope it exposes the myth of free market competition in the postal market. At least in the letters side of the business. You'd think companies like TNT, UK Mail, Business Post and City Link would be delighted with Royal Mail's current industrial strife, just think of all those juicy contracts they could pick up, except they're spitting feathers because when we go on strike they have no one to deliver it.

For now...but this will probably drag on for some time yet. Mail centres and drivers are out next Thursday and delivery staff are out the following Friday. It's a tactic the CWU used the last time we were out on strike in 2007. The theory is that it causes 48 hours of disruption to the service while staff only lose out on a day's pay. Last time the tactic of rolling strikes caused a lot of trouble for drivers faced with crossing picket lines. Drivers who refuse to cross picket lines, for whatever reason, are suspended on no pay and that's when unofficial walk outs start to spread. Striking is not a lot of fun.

How's that gonna work next week then when ShopTo et al. use UK mail instead of RM?

Don't worry. If you ordered something from ShopTo and they're using UK Mail to deliver during the Royal Mail strike periods then there shouldn't be any problem. UK Mail provide a courier and logistics service, but since the deregulation of the UK postal market they have branched out into the business post side, and that's what I'm on about. For example, a big customer, say a bank, pays UK Mail to collect their bulk mail and process it for less than Royal Mail charge, but it's then up to Royal Mail to deliver it for the 'final mile' as it's known. I'm assuming ShopTo normally send their stuff via Royal Mail but have switched to UK Mail. Out of curiosity are ShopTo still including free delivery?
