^It looks like Siberia from my window, too.

      Beautiful picture.

I feckin' hate the snow and cold, HATE, but I can't help but feel like a pussy when I'm walking over just about 9 inches of it and I'm getting ****-scared-o'-slippin'.

What British society *needs* is some SHOES THAT CAN ADEQUATELY GRIP ON SNOW AND ICE.

I've been racking my brains thinking of suitable soles. Steel spikes was first, but that would scrape and deface the pavement underneath, and the council would never want that. Fur was next, but that would become damp and smelly when wet, would possibly decay, and would need to be washed and dried too regularly.

I also thought of these shoes like + signs, kind of like chicken feet, giving you extra balance on both feet, you might slide but you'd be much less likely to fall over (but if you did, it might be devastating...).

Has any ice-based society ever truly and easily solved this problem of shoes that grip on slippery surfaces???

I've worn over-ankle steel toe-capped boots for the past 5 years or so... you'd think this would make me more stable on the snow. But no, I'm actually more prone to falling over. Had to to trek to the Co-op today to get a crate of beer - and trek is the right word! I was walking down the road so slowly and carefully, felt like a bit of a fool.

Tennis racquets tied to the shoes.

Surely that photo has been photoshopped for japes...??

            Naaaah, I'm after the serious...!

I'm not even sure those tennis racquets worked, tbh.

Shakey_Jake's over-ankle steel-toecaps don't work, my Timberlands mean f*ck-all to the ice, my Doc Martens feel more like 'gliders of the ice' (though their width of sole is OK). Even them ****ty steel-toecapped crappers I got forced to be given for work keep on ejaculating how absolute rubbish they are when standing on ice/deep-frozen snow.

Oh god, how much I beg for a trainer that grips semi-decently on ice.

My Caterpillar over-ankle steel-toecap boots seem to do the trick for me, I don't slip at all while walking in the snow - ice however, is a different kettle of fish entirely!

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm here now, but at personal risk to myself (The 'main' road I come to work on was a death trap this morning. Having to run through two thin tracks of tarmac... which are now littered with ice pockets) and for no discernible benefit.

                Bastards. Words have been had.

Only upshot of all this snow is our solar tubes have gone into overdrive. Bolier has been off for 24 hours and the water in the tank is still 64c!
Tell me more? What's that you've got? Solar panels that heat the hot water? And I'm guessing an electric pump that's solar powered to pump it round?

So how come it's working so well? The snow is reflecting the UV light onto the panels? I'm intrigued.

                    Great pic.

Day 3 working from home from me. Not managing to do too much from home because all the users I support aren't in their offices either! Bit of a pain as I really enjoy my job, but management is excellent and understanding.

To get out of my road I'd have to drive up one of three "small" hills, each of which is covered in ice. Even getting the car off the pavement looks dodgy, a neighbour tried it yesterday and crashed into another car.

This is the time when the payback kicks in, id imagine it is all the reflected light from the snow which is helping you out. Great stuff indeed........ Out of curiosity Huxley, did you fit these panels in yourself or were they there when you moved in?

Modern homes now 'tend' to have some form of renewable element to them now.

I have a 470 mile drive from my house in Scotland back to London in all this "adverse" weather today. Should be a real laugh. I've been keeping an eye on this thread to guage the possibility of problems en route!

According to the highways agency website the roads i'll be travelling on are fine. I move in to my new flat tomorrow and need to get down there, and obviously go back to work monday after my 3 weeks off.

I've bought some of these and they seem to be working a treat so far, on snow and ice. Bought them after stacking it a few times after the last snow in December..
