Didn't want to have to post in this thread, but just had a call from my bank re my debit card.

The police have advised my bank that my card details are compromised, so it's cancelled now. Luckily doesn't seem to be any money used so a good save from the bank. Still worrying though.

It seems that I too have drank from the cup of skank.

Got a phone call this afternoon from barclays fraud dept. They didn't ask for card details or anything, just my address and postcode. The guy said there had been suspicious activity on my card. He reeled off my last few day's transaction history - all correct - and said that I'd been charged 63p by ATT services. A tester perhaps? Since then I'd been charged £23.95 by billitsecure.com but the bank have blocked it and cancelled my debit card.

The call seemed genuine - no card details were asked for and the transaction history was bang on. Trying to log onto barclays internet banking, it's not accepting the login details.

Phone Barclays now!! your address and postcode along with recent transaction data may be enough for someone to get in to your account, I used to work for them a long time ago and im pretty sure these fall under secondary security questions (identity prover)

if in doubt, phone barclays for confirmation.

If someone has enough access to your account to get that kind of info, they've already got more info on your personal details than you gave out.

Phoned! Scare averted. It's put a temporary halt to buying ****, but it's a sacrifice worth making.

Crikey, I find HSBC's calls are just like that - very brusque and they ask for similar sorts of things, also I don't recall them ever really asking for any proper information. However the last few times they've called it has actually been them.

More recently it was to call me about a missed payment on my Mastercard and they then set up a direct debit.

Strange, maybe next time I should make sure they really are who they say they are.

So prinny, are you saying it wasn't Barclays?

I've done that before, Barclays keep putting stops on my account (when I bought a TV, when I tried an online casino for the first time) and the first time I got called by them, I was worried I'd potentially given out account info to a scammer and called their fraud department to confirm it came from them.

It was them, but thinking about it, it so easily couldn't.

I just a) took their interest in address-based info rather than card details and security codes as being confirmation of them being the bank, and not master criminals, and b) was a bit pissed on 6 pints and didn't really know what the hell was going on.

I received a letter from Natwest Security & Fraud Operations asking me to contact them urgently. They told me that there were possible fraudulent attempts to use my card and I was asked to confirm recent transactions. Which I did and although I was able to confirm the recent transactions on my card, I was told that my card has been cancelled and that I'll be sent a new one in the next few days.

Apparently this is because Natwest have it on good authority that my card has been cloned by known fraudsters. Bugger. I asked the chap on the phone what may have caused this. And he said that it may have been caused by a skimmed cash machine or a online retailer that I've used.

Now I doubt it was a skimmed cash machine as I always check for any dodgy devices and always cover up my pin. And I haven't used them a lot recently anyway. Which leaves the possibility of a online retailer that I've used recently. My mate told me that shopto got hacked recently but I haven't used them since March and I've used a few other online retailers since.

Well that's the situation that happened to me a few months back; couldn't say why they cancelled the card, just got a new one. Might be ShopTo, might have been Forbidden Planet, might have been Travel Planners (the online reservation site for San Diego Comicon, which a few people have said the cards they used there have been leaked and used fraudulently). All three apparently had "issues" within a short space of the same time so I don't know which one it might have been.

The situation is quite baffling to be honest as there are several possibilities that may have caused it. First time I've experienced something like this and it's not a very nice feeling.

Meh, I might have to get a another card on a second account to use solely for online purchases.

Shopto got alot of bad press a while ago, as far back as last year I think about this. If you google it you can find loads of info on it....

i was done for ?1500 in april, the only place this credit card has ever been used is shopto, never used anywhere else, it was a tesco credit card, and they were brill phoned to confirm these transactions, only the shop to was mine, they took them off my card there and then, sent me a letter asking me to sign to say these were not my transactions, so id say it could of been shopto for you too

Just checked my Barclaycard and there's been a £10 o2 top up but I'm on an Orange contract. I did have an o2 sim ages ago but it's been cut off for a long time. I don't get it, I thought mobile top ups with a credit card only work if the sim's registered to the same address as the credit card? Unless they have done that already? Going to ring Barclays now...

There seems to be a lot of scams with top-ups at the moment.

I had 2 x £30 vodafone top-ups taken from my account a couple of months back. Never been a customer.

You'll probably be asked to destroy your card and be asked to sign a declaration saying that you didn't authorise the payments. Once investigated (4-6 weeks) the payments should be reversed along with any interest charged on them.
