Finally got my sleeve finished yesterday.

The tribal bit in the middle is about 15 years old and was very difficult to integrate.

The whole lot took about 18 hours (including tea breaks) and was about 80% freehanded.

Had a bit more done on my right arm yesterday, another couple of sittings may see this arm finished. Crappy phone pics don't really do it justice. In again on the 22nd, but i'll probably go for some work on the left arm that day.

          Pics removed!

Why do people get dot-shading, is it because they like dots? Or is it because in the long run, when the ink bleeds, you get a really good shade effect?

Dot-shading is a brilliant way to create depth and imply the illusion of fade. It works especially well in artwork with pens, though i have to admit i don't see it used often for tattoos... which is a shame considering the quality of Square's. Awesome mate, love it.

I just heard a tattooist compliment another chaps work, saying that his shading looks **** at the start, scratchy, but over time it blends and fades together and looks great

Not that I am saying yours looks **** at all, just dots and space, will blend together to make a blend?

It's just an art style - it won't blend together for a long, long time, if ever.

There's a show that's just started on the Freeview channel, Quest, called Tattoo Hunter. It's about a tattoo anthropologist who travels the world, observing different cultures and getting their cultural tattoos. Worth catching for some of the awesome tribal tattoos done by hand.
