    Exactly.

On one occasion, a call from an unknown number to my phone was an unwanted sales call... so I hung up on them. Simple.

Because people I know do this to me if I call them from a number they don't recognise (e.g. my work mobile). I use the number to save a bit of money, and they refuse to answer it in case I'm a stalker or something.

Quite often when I pick the phone up it was someone I knew was calling who wasn't in my phone, or something worthwhile anyway. Silly not to.

If someone rang me and I wasn't availiable to answer, or didn't know the number, I would always ring them back just in case. It only takes two seconds to tell someone to piss off if they are trying to sell you something, and if it's a wrong number you tell them in a polite way. No real stress.

So the real issue here isn't the safety of loved ones. It's that someone isn't taking your calls.

I can see how that would irk you though.

Talking of phones, one of my irks is ... phones.

Nine times out of ten it's someone selling something, a wrong number (I must have told one company that 'Mr McBride' doesn't live here 50 times), or someone I know but I'm not interested in talking to at that moment. That's poor form, I know, but I just don't like phone yapping, it's lacking proper interaction.

I look back at those days before mobile phones and think how nice it was to be totally alone. To go for a walk in the hills and not feel obliged to take the damn thing 'just in case.'

Give me your phone then,or cancel you contract or something. If phones really irk you

I don't like when people don't answer calls from unknow numbers as I always do, most of the times I have encountered this is with people who lack any confidence and don't feel comfortable talking to people they don't know, answering an unknown number (blocked or just random) isn't a big deal. This probably relates back to the fact that my girlfriend has such low confidence she wont even make phone calls to strangers, like ordering a pizza, or calling her phone company.

People who are constantly on their mobile, or all up in the mobile craze annoy me. Oh whats that you've got a nokia ZW8300 with 3G and bluetooth and .. blehhh zzzz

Half the time I don't even know where mine is. I worked with someone recently who despite not being allowed to use phones outside of breaks, was texting on the thing all the ****ing time and basically engrossed in it, when I was asking him questions they were falling on deaf ears.

When I exclaimed god I *cking hate mobile phones he pricked his ears up finally.

its probably not as bad as mine which is a 5yr old monochrome nokia with no internet or mp3 or .. well anything really. I love it when people slag off their phones and then pull out a colour screen music playing internet capable device which is about 3 months old at most.

my mobile related irk is people who come to meetings then spend the whole time fiddling with their Blackberry, why not just sit at your desk and do your emails if they that important.

                        its so bloody rude.

People who don't answer their phones because they don't recognise the incoming number. Those who do this say thing like "I don't want to answer because I don't know who it is!". Well you're not going to unless you do. And if it's someone you don't want to speak to, you can always, you know... hang up.

Paranoia for the sake of it. Not everyone who calls from an unrecognised number wants to kill you.
In Japan there is actually a legal system whereby a company can email or call you and charge you for the privilege - and no you don't get any option to accept or refuse said call/email. There are a lot of scams out there taking advantage of it.. my girlfriend had to change her phone cos she kept getting sent emails that she was charged for.

Sounds like the phone companies are the real criminals there, but nevertheless I will never answer an unrecognised (and unexpected) call here.

Phones - simple. If they don't pick up then just leave a message. When I have missed calls people who need/want to get hold of me leave a message and I get back to them. Just because I have amobile phone does not automatically entitle people to talk to me when they want. Sales/spam calls never leave a message.

My phone is a work phone, we actually have a policy that states you should ignore calls that you don't recognise or are from held numbers.

People videoing themselves when there's no need for it. There was a time that if you wanted to know how to do something a bit techy you could fine a forum post or a blog with a code snipept or some instructions or whatever. now, the top hits from google seem to be some fat knacker sat at a desk introducing himself and then showing you a video of him doing whatever it is. Arghh!!!!

Calls from my place of work show up as unknown... so naturally I have a personal policy never to answer unknown callers.
