I think you need to add a disclaimer to that - NOT referring to Japanese people with "san" would be both stupid and disrespectful if you are actually in Japan... in fact you would come across like a proper c**t.

I think it's been raised a fair few times, but i've just seen it again in a thread. Why do people say "brought" when they mean "bought"???? Where and when did this start??? And the people who do it post in here, so they've seen that it's wrong, but continue to do it. And it's definitely with an "I", not defAnately. It really is ridiculous. The scary thing is, it's something this small that could push me to have a "falling down" moment and lose it. I've started replying to emails correcting and highlighting these mistakes to the senders. I'm no genius with spelling and punctuation, but it amazes me how little grip people can have on their own language. There were two people posting an argument in a thread recently, and the amount of bad spelling was unreal. To the point of me thinking they could only have very severe learning difficulties. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH!!!!!!!!

Haha, love this post. As a teacher I see kids use Pacific instead of Specific all the time. Used to drive me nuts but I'm over it now.

It's not just the fact they spell bought as brought, but they actually say it as well. And the thread is "little things that irk you", and that is mine. Now i'm just off to my weekly Nazi conference before heading to pearl jam.............

Spent the weekend at a very nice hotel, signed into the leisure club and notice on the top of the form it said "SIGNITURE". Pointed it out to the small child on the desk and got a "is it?" in response. Ruined my weekend.

I find it much more amusing when people say it. Always reminds me of good old Del Boy.

So the rear roller on my six year old treadmill is on the way out.

No problem thinks I, I'll just email the manufacturer to buy a replacement part.

"Sorry, that model is discontinued now and we don't do spares."

                              Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuiuiuuuuuuuuuu...

I'd rather not add that disclaimer. If someone's speaking Japanese then obviously they're going to use it, so a disclaimer would be irrelevant. If I'd gone to Japan not speaking Japanese then I still wouldn't use it if I was speaking in English - what's the point? If I was speaking to a friend in English, I'd just refer to them by their first name. If they were someone I didn't know then it'd me Mr/Mrs. I don't always call my Japanese mates san whether I'm speaking Japanese or not, I'll use whatever add-on I feel like at the time, like kun or sama, or mostly just won't bother.

In that case, I may as well refer to myself as my first name like a rapper - Bilal wants tea - they like doing that, don't they?
