Can someone explain what this thing is? I mean I really don't understand the niche - it's not portable enough to be carried everywhere (Like the iPhone)... and why on earth would I use it when I have a full PC/laptop available?
I'm not bashing it, I just don't understand where it fits. It looks sexy and all, but I can't even consider getting one because I don't know what the ****ing hell it's for!

It is ideal for my home where I can browse the internet from the couch and then take into the kitchen with a recipe up. Yes, I have a small laptop, but the thing heats my legs/sack up. Not in a burning way, but possibly in a sperm damaging way. Plus there's the need of plugging it in or slightly suffer with a dimmed screen. Then there's the mouse.
Personally, I never bothered checking the iPad out once I heard it was announced. But last week I stumbled on the promo video and realised that I now need one
Outside of the casual on the couch browsing there's gaming and creativity side of the product that excite me too.

Yeah, it's really just a luxury/convenience item because there's nothing it does that a laptop/PC can't do but it's the way it does them which is the selling point. Since getting my iPhone last summer I would say about 80% of my web browsing is done on it while my laptop only really gets turned on when I need to type alot or want to download something. Everything is just so quick and easy thanks to the endless supply of Apps on offer, and the fact there are so many means they will only get better given there's so much competition. Can't wait to see what the extra power/screen size will do for iPad apps

Surely you don't need apps if you have er like a er laptop with a browser?
I don't get it either. And when I take my laptop to the kitchen for recipes and checking/adjusting my squeezebox playlists (music is piped into the kitchen), I can also close the lid to stop it getting splashed in food. And I don't have to pay $10 for the iPeng squeezebox remote app for the iphone.
And I don't have to touch the screen to get it to do stuff. I watched someone using an ipod touch last week. He has been using it for a long time and he was fumbling around trying to resize photos and move them around. Even flicking from one to the next didn't look reliable. It looked fancy, but just clicking left and right is better.
I probably shouldn't post in here any more because I'm probably looking like some sort of apple troll.

Still at least I know I'm not missing something now.

It's just comfort, I now browse on my sofa in advert breaks, replying on here etc, I love it.
As for the iPad, if I had the money I'd be getting one, I was sceptical but they really do seem cool, and given that my laptop takes forever to boot and is horribly out of date, and that my PC is in another room...it'd be a great edition to the Jebus household...buuuuut, they are horrific price wise and I can't help thinking that if I had that kind of money, I'd find it hard to justify spending laptop prices on something so "closed" OS wise.

Also, the lack of Flash would be really off-putting to me. It only bugs me a little when I can't displaay Flash content on my iPod Touch but it does bug me and if I was paying a serious premium for something bigger, I'd expect it to play every thing I could possibly find on the web. Apple are being complete tits about the whole Flash thing.
I'd like one for drawing with Brushes. But that's really the only thing that would draw me to one. My opinion may well completely change when I get to use one for myself but it really does seem like my iPod Touch is just as good and far handier.

Well I think the line from Apple is that it hogs resources, would drain batteries, is unstable and will be replaced by HTML5.
I don't know how true the first two are, maybe they're right but I remember having no trouble running Flash content on old relics back in the day. And unstable? Maybe, I've never had a problem with it on anything else.
As for being replaced by HTML5, maybe it will be at some point. But right now, a ridiculous amount of websites use Flash for content and videos. So that point has no relevance until it has actually been replaced by HTML5.
Personally, I can't help feeling the amount of apps they have sold that are paid conversions of free Flash games has not gone unnoticed. It may not be the deciding factor but it would certainly lessen the incentive to offer Flash.
