The reasons are complex but from a statistics PoV certain races are either more/less likey to commit a crime or be a victim.
The study also included various types of crime that are known to have extremely low reporting figures. This makes the information based on a small subset of crime and therefore not necessarily representative of the real picture.
Finally you look at the stats and assume causation rather than effect. There is absolutely no indication whatsoever that these figures are to do with race when more than likely they are due to geographical and/or socioeconomic factors. And guess what...... car insurance companies do take those things into account.
The fact is that the car insurance companies don't target men just because of boy racers, it's because of the male mentality. We are more likely to drink drive, we are more likely to drive erratically as a result of anger or road rage, we are generally less careful on the roads because of our egos. I've never seen a woman tailgaiting someone before but everytime you get some self important man who thinks it's acceptable to break the speed limit you end up with them so close to your rear bumper they'd total you in the event of an accident.Last edited by averybluemonkey; 01-03-2011, 14:51.

The latest breaking UK, US, world, business and sport news from The Times and The Sunday Times. Go beyond today's headlines with in-depth analysis and comment.
Regardless, it's not exactly a huge stretch that from a statistics point of view some races are more expensive than others given there are notable differences between races in surveys covering most aspects of life (there are differences even among people living in the same areas in similar income brackets).
The whole point of equality laws is that everyone is treated as equal. Men be able to physically exert themselves far more than women but you could never use that as justification to hire a man over a woman at a construction firm even though science would back that up (or just watching any physically intensive sport).
You cannot make assumptions on anyone on the basis of race, religion, disabilities or sex by law. Just because a group is more likely to behave in a certain way, that doesn't mean an individual will behave like that.

The horror toilet is the exact opposite. Having to wade through a lake of piss, reaching a trap and finding a swiss roll-type ****e anchored in the pot. There's usually a hideous stench, no toilet paper, a smashed lock, and the phone numbers of cocksuckers plastered on the walls.

That the chav who elected to shoulder barge me came out of it worse than I did.
Saw him from quite a distance and new what was going to happen, but I was turning a tight corner so I must have had some sort of momentum advantage. The aggressive chuff proper spun around on the spot...and called me an effing pee.
I'm quite slight and usually go flying in these situations too. Man, I was beaming.

I have a feeling we may all be surprised here. Car insurance is a highly competitive market, so it will only take 1 or 2 of the big companies to lower the male and hike the woman (tending to the average as it should) for all the others to have to follow to remain competitive.
I suspect they will use other outcomes to determine the 'gender' element, the initially obvious one is car type / colour.
So...
The idiot boy racer in my city who drives like a maniac in his:
1.0 Seat Arosa in Salmon Pink
will have a wealth of woman factor on his cars, so potentially could see his premiums decrease.
Me in my crazy bright green tuned Lotus Elise on the other hand will likely see lots of man factor, thus potentially raising my premiums.
the moral:
Make your next car a small French hatch / tigra / pink Micra / Fiat 500 / MINI / Mx5
As for things that make me smile - the aforementioned green item
Even if I've not used it since September

The insurance thing is funny though, I mean I don't expect anyone to be happy about paying more - but it's funny to see how many people truly believe in equality. The sexist press has reported it as "women having to pay more!" but surely the actual truth is that men have been subsidising women for years, so in reality it's "women paying their share"?
