Haha I remember not believing "the f word" (or "****") had an actual meaning when I was in Primary school. I was a stubborn little **** too so it took some years of arguing to realise it did

To answer the q nope, I am not, but my two half brothers are.

Yeah, same here. Suits me too, I find it has more impact.

you've lost me completely... that is physically and chronologically impossible... Were you involved in a pre arrangement marrige? Or that was a Guybush Threepwood type of pirate come back, in which case... killing you would be justifiable homicide...

Dave - didn't you watch Game of Thrones though? They talk about bastards a fair bit in the book so I thought you would have learned the meaning from there.

Not a Monkey Island reference, but now that you mention it I can see how.

I was just being absurd for the hell of it.

This is it, I'd learned the wrong 'true' meaning until today.

Initially I thought it meant you don't know your dad (history teacher taught us this), then GoT confused me because I thought maybe he was adopted by Bean but it turns out the same applies to not knowing your mother, but nope, that's still wrong - it actually means that your parents weren't married at the time of your birth.

So, even if your parents are still together after all those years, although not married, you are still a bastard.

On the other hand, your parents can be married at the time of birth, and then suddenly your dad buggers off two days later... You will never know your father but you ain't a bastard.

So its all to do with if your parents are hitched or not during your birth and not to do with the conceiving part? This real meaning of bastardation (if such a word exists) sounds VERY old hat... You'll be asking when it became a derogatory term next

Its not old hat, its the original/true meaning of the flipping word. Swearing over the years have given it a secondary term but thats the beauty of the ever evolving English language I suppose. A long time ago it was seen as a big shame to be born out of wedlock, still is in some cultures/religions.

I fear some people have entered this thread not knowing they really are bastards

It's an old-fashioned concept because it's a very old word.

William of Normandy (who became William the Conqueror in 1066 AD) was also known as William The Bastard, because he was born out of wedlock.

As a child of the 80s, I surely can't be the only one to remember a VHS rental tape called 'The Bastard'(???)

I never got my mum to rent it, seemed like some drama, it looked ****.

(I'm not a 'bastard', btw, not in the technical sense nor the metaphorical sense, though my dad is a proper c*nt. I think it's an excellent cuss word but that's all it should be, there's nothing wrong with being an actual 'bastard', for these bastards have no hand in the matter, and the idea that not being born in wedlock somehow flaws a baby is ridiculously backwards. It's like being proud of being English. No choice there, just what IS).

If it weren't for bastards, we'd never have the legendary 'Bastard Sword' of RPG mythos. When I get deathly ill, I wanna get taken out by a Bastard Sword.

One of the reasons that it was so frowned upon was that typically the father would be nowhere to be seen, so the parish would pay for the child/mother. It was like the equivalent of dole scum back in the day, but worse because the women couldn't support herself

Bastard also meant a rough or irregular surface at one point in history, think of the finer part of the sword with its sides serrated like a file - Probably not the most elegant of swords to fall to, to be honest. Also, notice how they are always at the post-beginner stage of RPGs... better than your ****ty bronze or iron swords, but only just.
