I would recommend MX Player but it doesn't work with Kitkat 4.4.2, which is the latest OS for the n7 (all iterations).
I use MX Player Pro on my Nexus 7 running 4.4.2 just fine.

The free version wouldn't work for me the last time I tried it. I also find recently that it doesn't support .avi, which greatly disturbs me.

If you have a DLNA device like an Xbox One or SmartTV then this is easy.
Install free iMediaShare. Navigate to the video gallery, find the video, click on it and choose the device you want to "play to". I can happily beam videos from my Nexus to the TV with this (wirelessly).

Hmm, odd that is. The pro version plays everything I throw at it such as VOB, AVI, MKV, MPG, WMV. and so on. With VOB files you do need to change to software encoding for the audio to work but that's no big deal on the Nexus since its got more than enough power.

Can someone tell me if the Android OS and Google Play store is set up so if you are using an older version of the OS you cannot purchase apps you cannot use?

                Yes, this is the case.
If your device is not supported you either don't get the buy/install option or it tells you directly. Like Iwata.
Using the website to do it let's you see which of your registered devices can install it.

I had MX Player installed before upgrading to 4.4.2, which seems to be where the issues stem from. In theory, everything that works under 4.4 should work the same under 4.4.2
Check comments on apps before spending though, just in case.

i was tempted by one of these but the price seems to have jumped with most places selling for ?199, have google put the price up as you cant buy the 16gig from there store as it says its no longer available?

Bit of an impulse buy but i picked up a Nvidia Tegra Note 7 recently. This started out as a ?190 tablet in the uk but could recently be picked up for ?90 in pc world and is an absolute bargain, it thrashes the nexus 7 on pretty much all the benchmark tests and is a very powerful little device beating Samsung and Sony's premium tabs on cpu and graphic performance (check out the benchmark stuff below its a beast)

Nvidia is partnering with EVGA on the company's second Tegra 4-based device. Its Tegra Note 7 sells for $200, sports unique stylus technology, and ships with a bloatware-free build of Android. Can it set a new standard for affordable seven-inch tablets?

screen is better quality than my aging ipad 2, its not as nice as the 2013 nexus 7, but its on par with the 2012 nexus 7, that saying I'm more than happy with my little ?90 tab and the included stylus is pretty nifty too. i also got the kitkat update for it over the air which was a nice surprise. it works great with my sony tv too as my tv has screen mirror options via dlna built in.

They had them with free shipping and $25 play store credit from the NA store recently. Bit of a shame I already had one but meh.

Looking to get our daughter a tablet after Christmas, the Google 2013 was top of the list but I'm also interested in the LG 8.3, it's a little bit dearer but same res screen apparently.

Just got my Nexus induction charger! Finally, wireless charging. It's like something out of Star Trek...like tablets themselves.
Works with the 4,5 and the 2013 7.

Saw a 16GB Wi-Fi only 2013 model going for sale at a local Crime Converters-style shop for around ?150. Tempted but didn't stop to find out what condition it was in.
