They didn't even give me spelling tests. That's being educated in a labour government for you.

You've never had a spelling test? I find that odd.

Exactly, this is a games forum not anything remotely professional. If i was filling in a job application then that's different.

We had arithmetic tests every Friday, I actually set a record 19 week streak for being top of the class in those but we never had spelling tests. I vaguely remember I had workbooks that had spelling sections when I first went to school but it was a book so obviously the word was already written, we just wrote the same word next to it.

If you need help with making cats from pipe cleaners or want to know details about religions I've never believed in I can help there, we covered a lot of that, just don't come to me about spelling or Darwinism or anything useful.

Go on, no-one gives two hoots, we're all casual here. I'm sure Charles will wield his Thor-ian Ban Hammer if it all kicks off.

What difference does that make though? Why intentionally slack just because it's not anything remotely professional? That seems like more effort than not to me. I speak/write exactly the same wherever I am.

Lies. The year 6 literacy SAT (possibly year 2 and year 9 ones too) had a spelling test as a subsection.

That's not the weekly spelling tests J0e was referring to?

It isn't no. This was when schools were actually called schools, and not some ****ing academy bull****. We had blackboards and I regularly stood up and read to the class because I was good at it. We actually learnt stuff back then.

Well thankfully I was saved from "**** Muncher Academy #407" and spent my GCSE years at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls where I learnt proper old school stuff on blackboards like Shakespeare, Dickens, Renaissance Italy and fending off creepy teachers who probably only took the job because of the mandatory skirts rule, even in P.E. "Trampolining and Gymnastics rotation again Mr. Bennett? you'll be right at the side holding me steady again" what a shock... :/

Fair enough, even so I'd be surprised if a school sat kids for a paper they had had no previous practice for.

I went to two different primary schools and both did weekly spelling tests, as did my secondary school. Not every week mind, but frequently enough. My spelling is still fairly rubbish though!

No, I was a fairly nerdy kid so I'd have loved spelling tests (arithmetic tests were the highlight of my week) but in primary school we were just given workbooks that had "Copy the words" then the same words would be the answers to "Fill in the Blank" a few pages later. Those workbooks weren't ever just spelling though, there was usually multiple choice grammar like "The cat is over THERE or the cat is over THEIR?".

Actually for some reason all I remember about primary school is cats (making cats from pipe cleaners, reading books based on the adventures of cats, my teacher bringing in her kittens, baking/decorating cupcakes to look like cats...) :|

I have often pondered over this proverb.
