Actually, no...Diet Coke was introduced at the same time as New Coke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_coke). New Coke was famously a huge flop, and they ditched the new flavour to return to the classic Coke taste. But Diet Coke (a sugar free version of New Coke's flavour) was already a hit, so they kept it on alongside classic Coke.

Coke Zero was introduced more recently as a sugarfree version of the classic Coke flavour.

Obviously they openly market them based on gender though

Can't imagine drinking a soft drink unless it is being used as a mixer. Tea/coffee/water/booze. The only liquids for ne.
