It was only 270 odd pages with maybe half of that actual text (which was quite large)! On average, a 300+ page book will take me a couple of weeks, unless it's a James Patterson novel with very short chapters.

Bit of a Blur by Alex James, biog from before blur to presumably modern day (2k8), if you like Blur or pop music in general its prving pretty funny and utmostly interesting.

Pet Semetry - The second most scary book (when I was 16) that I ever read, the most scary is next, Salem's Lot - cant wait but probably won't be that scary now

I read Salems Lot a few months back and tbh, i found it really slow (i read it years ago and thought it was better). The 2 part film with David Soul is a better way to spend your time.

Just reading the last Necroscope book; The Touch. Its not bad but far too similar to Brian Lumleys last.

The original Necroscope series is probably the best series of books i have read. How a film hasn't been made of E-Branch or the Necroscope is beyond me as it would be fantastic in the right hands.

If you want to read a good Vampire book, then read the Necroscope series. They are untouchable.

Just finished 'The Bedroom Secrets Of The Master Chefs', by Irvine Welsh, zoomed through it over three days. A very readable book - I'd place it above 'Filth' and 'Ecstasy' - though the writing quality can be all over the place, veering from grippingly funny to dishwater dull, almost phoned in. Not a great ending, too, but overall a very compelling read, and Welsh is a true individual, whatever you think of his stuff.

Also contains 3-4 pages of THE MOST repulsively hilarious writing I've ever read in one of the final chapters (entitled 'Perseverance'), absolutely disgustingly funny stuff. Tears were literally streaming down my face. Unbelievable!

I've nearly finished with Stephen King's 'the Gunslinger', finding the book to be very hit and miss in that some of the narrative is a bit incoherent at times...its only a short book but still, not much happens. Probably try the second book as i've heard it gets better after this...

The Dark Tower series are some of the best books I've ever read. The Gunslinger is quite slow but as you read the next 6 books (and you will) you'll realise that it's a great introduction to the story. Read the lot in about 6 months back in '05 and would be quite happy to go back to them again now

Been reading a fair bit lately. Ploughed through Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Been meaning to watch the film for years, but after grabbing the book I'm even more keen to see it. Now going through The Great Gatsby.

"Your attitude determines you altitude" - crazy personal development book. Good content, presented from a pilot's perspective on life

Don't get much time to read, but when I'm on holiday, I love tucking into a Matthew Reilly novel. They're not very high-brow, but great adventures and are really exciting to read.

What more could you ask for of a holiday read?

Does anybody else read his book and maybe suggest some similar authors? Fanks.

Strange. I just read this again this morning. It really is brilliant isn't it?

Definitely give some of his short stories a go if you haven't already, and if you like Gatsby. There are loads of collections of them floating around.

They Thirst by Robert R McCammon is also probably the best stand alone vampire book i have ever read (totally different to Necroscope). Its a million times better than Salems Lot. All McCammons novels are top notch tbh. Probably the most underrated horror writer going.

                                Update on what I've read:

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. A very solid story about a dystopian society where selected groups of women are forced to act as surrogates. Definitely want to explore more Atwood.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I loved this. I've definitely been very late to discover Murakami but did so after numerous friends recommended him. Just a matter of time before I've read most of his works.

Just finished: I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. Read this because I had heard that it influenced the vampire/zombie genre and heard about it from the film of course, though I haven't seen the film and don't want to. I didn't enjoy the first third too much, but the second half of the book is far more interesting and it has a pretty good ending to boot.
