Think that raises more questions than it answers - if there was a lot of disgruntlement from the crew, is it possible live rounds were purposely placed in the weapon just to cause a guffaw? I don't suppose if that were the case that the intent was to injure anyone, but from all the reports around it, I'd be surprised if there wasn't criminal investigations coming out of this.

In an affidavit, Dave Halls told investigators he ‘should have checked all’ the rounds as officials confirm gun contained live bullets
It's been confirmed that the prop gun used on the set of Rust, and that was used when Halyna Hutchins was killed, is not a prop gun but actually an antique real gun. Officers also found multiple live rounds on the set and that the Assistant Director has now admitted that he did not fully check the rounds in the gun before he passed it to Baldwin and informed him it was safe to use.

My guess is:
To get the close up shot looking authentic, they used an antique gun and put live rounds in because it had an open barrel and an American audience would notice if the gun wasn't loaded in the shot. Normally the hammer would be filed off so it can't make contact with the bullet but this wasn't the case, so when the trigger was squeezed the gun unexpectedly went off.

That would be really unusual. An actor would not fire guns into the air to check for bullets. As a side note, I have always wondered - when a bullet is fired into the air, can it kill someone on the way down? Maybe it doesn't get enough velocity on the fall back down.
But there were serious failures here to allow a loaded gun to be pointed at a camera. There have to be so many ways to fake that without the need for a gun loaded with live rounds. Even having live rounds on set at all seems nuts to me. And for them not to have so many safety checks in place? That's a massive problem and I suspect the fallout from this could be pretty big.

There just shouldn't be live rounds. Blanks carry their own element of risk but having live rounds around will always make it a matter of when rather than if something like this happens again. It's almost less of a Hollywood issue and more another extension of an America (well, technically New Mexico in this case) one.
