The Tories Climate Chief has warned that we're now on the brink of catastrophe for the climate and that the upcoming conference on the issue may be our last chance to do something about it

He's also backed Troy plans for new UK oil and gas fields!
Everyone needs to give up hope of saving the planet, its done, corals dead very soon, bees will go soon as well, thats 2 cornerstone species gone forever. Greenland icecap is melting at an astonishing rate along with other major icecaps.

Give yourself a clap everyone it was a real joint effort.

The faster we burn through all of the oil available, the sooner it'll run out, and therefore the environment will start recovering earlier.

There was a moment before trump got in that the world was beginning to take it seriously. Then Trump said **** it to climate change and the rest of the world went 'yeah **** it too'.
We probably could have done something, but now governments are just filling their pockets as much as they can before the **** hits the fan.

Its a great attitude to have thinking 10 years down the road when we should be thinking 1000. Oh well was a nice unique irreplaceable ecosystem while it lasted, which was literally 200 years of industrial abuse to screw billions of years of evolution.

To be honest, once humans die out the planet will bounce back. It'll become inhospitable to humans long before it becomes a dead planet. It may have to start back at more basic lifeforms.

That's probably where the climate activists go wrong. The Earth isn't actually at risk, it's the human race so it should be sold as trying to save ourselves instead - self interest is always mankinds biggest incentive for anything

The latest Climate Change Report cements mankinds fault in causing global warming and that hotter weather events over the next thirty years are now unavoidable. Even with steep immediate action from today a rise of 1.5 degrees over the next two decades is locked in which has now made it inevitable that parts of the world will suffer droughts, some species will go extinct. To curb any effects beyond the next 30 years the majority of the planet would need to be carbon neutral by 2050 - achieving this along with removal of existing air carbon would halt the heat increase at 1.5 degrees. Should that target be missed it would lead to increases of 2, 3 or 4 degrees with each additional degree adding to the effects and rising the sea level so some island nations would disappear.

The last 10 years is said to be the hottest the Earth has been in 125,000 years whilst carbon dioxide levels are marked as being at their highest in 2,000,000 years. Current national planning is projected to set the Earth on course for a 3 degree increase, twice the target.

The Co2 bit is the part which really worries me. I mean that only has to go up a bit for the quality of life of all animals to significantly diminish.

Maybe we should start subsidising Brazil to not cut down their rainforest.

That's exactly what needs to happen. Whilst we have mined the coal and oil from our land, they are doing the same with their natural commodities. Not to mention Britain was also once covered in trees.

The lead story on BBC was about how China need to make their current industrial revolution greener. Until they do it, us putting paper in recycling is just weeing in the gales.

That's the thing; their government is a bit of a shambles but it's true what they said; we in Europe cut down all of our trees and we "get" to have a continent that we've utterly scarred for human habitation, so us telling them to stop cutting down the rainforest does kinda smack of arrogance.

The flaw in the Brazilian argument that "you cut your forests down so now it's our turn" is that no-one at the time knew how damaging it was. And Brazil has already received international subsidies not to cut down the rainforest but these were withdrawn when they pocketed the cash and continued deforestation anyway: https://www.france24.com/en/20190816...tion-bolsonaro

The other flaw in the argument that 'you cut down your forests so now we get to do ours' is that it is literally ****ing over the entire human race, and they know it. It's insanity. To take a tit-for-tat moral high ground on it is beyond stupid.

Okay then, if the government are just going to pocket the money then they need to set up a way to pay workers not to work.

I haven't been to Brazil but I have been to similar regions in Cambodia. These people cutting down trees aren't rich. They live in sheds. I'm sure they are making someone else rich though. If I'm surrounded by trees and the only job available is to cut them down so America can build houses I'm probably going to go cutting trees, as would you. We did the same in the welsh valleys with coal. The mines closed and communities are still feeling the sting.

They definitely know it. But we had our industrial revolution and became a global presence. Brazil and China are in the middle of theirs. I feel weird kind of being on this side of the argument as it is obviously awful but we are essentially talking about poor workers making enough money for food. What else have they got in these countries? Until that is answered nothing can stop.

Here in Wales, a few miles from my house, they just cut down hundreds of trees and excavated several miles of farmland to build 3000 overpriced houses. Brazil are at stage 1 of this process.
