I'm literally saying to avoid Twitter if you feel any grief. The trends are overwhelmingly negative.

It's weird because here in the UK, we have a cultural thing where we don't celebrate death, even that of our enemies. Like when Saddam Hussain was executed, people didn't celebrate even if you approved of the execution. But that's not an attitude shared by other cultures.

Today, I've been actually quite surprised at the breadth of people who are saddened by her death.
All sorts of different groups and people I thought wouldn't be bothered, but have expressed their mourning.

So, it's mainly come from that revelation that I think it's worth mentioning that just because you're not feeling grief, doesn't mean the person you're talking to isn't.

That's fair, I will say that the majority of my ire comes from the role (admittedly not all though, she wasn't a 'good' person). That and how the mourning is so incredibly media led, mourning because we're being told to in such an overbearing, relentless and almost embarrassingly condescending manner. In reality, all these outlets will be wringing their hands at the massive payday the event has just delivered them in sales and clicks. I'm less entertaining of stuff like Charles keenness for the crown etc as that very directly dismisses familial loss.

Away from the crown though an interesting one:

Judge to consider trans charity’s appeal to strip LGB Alliance of legal status | Transgender | The Guardian
Trans rights charity Mermaids is going head to head with LGB Alliance over the charitable legal status the latter has as LGB takes an opposing stance on trans rights. The outcome of the legal case is due next week and could have large impact on many charities across the country

I get that not everyone is moved by the Queen's death, but there are plenty of people who are.
It might be that they have an attachment to someone who's been a constant their whole life or it could just be that this has reminded them of their own grief of someone else.

IRL, think about who you're speaking to before you tell them your "hot take" and if they would appreciate it or not.

On here, you're free to speak your mind, but have a think about if your post is insensitive and if you should probably keep it to yourself.

Basically, try to have a bit of empathy.
Being honest here, it’s very difficult to feel any empathy for someone that lived to, what 96 was it? Had one of the most privileged lives on the planet, never worked a day (not what normal people have to put up with) & never wanted for anything at all. She had literally the best innings anyone could ask for in life.

All our empathy should be going to all the old ladies that won’t be able to realistically afford heating this winter, who had nothing before the energy crisis hit and are now beyond destitute.

Anyway, I’ll leave the subject be going forward.

No lies told here, and people who love the Royals and/or are currently trying to play grief-police with others who don't feel the same way need to understand all of this.

That said, I respect that QualityChimp and the other mods on here have an admittedly uneasy job to do in terms of controlling the discourse around this subject matter.

I too will now refrain from further comment.

While I completely agree with what fishbowlhead is saying above, think the concept of a bloodline-based state leader is rationally indefensible and outdated by at least two centuries, and think the extravagant lives of the Royals are a blatant waste of public funds, I still feel a little bit destabilised and a bit, I dunno, weird.

I didn't anticipate it or think that I would, I'm far from a Royalist, the family do loads of terrible ****, but, well, here we are.

I get that ministers will continue to have parties work during the 10 day parliament adjournment, but.... FFS. Now isn't the time to stop doing stuff.

Things are being cancelled left, right and centre today and it feels like a ton of people's lives and careers being messed with for zero gain. Unless you're actively involved in dealing with her death or ceremonial preparations it feels like more unnecessary impact. There are many, many examples but one on the news just now is that the last night of the Proms has been cancelled out of respect. All the attending patrons who have just lost money on journeys and hotels etc for nothing, the work in processing that cancellation etc rather than simply add a small respectful acknowledgment into the head of the show. It even plays Rule Britannia so would have been an obvious and easy tribute moment for the last night.

I'm not trying to shut down debate, we're a pretty safe space, it's just that I wanted to say everyone's reaction is going to be different, not a binary happy/sad about it.

Tying in with what Fishbowlhead said, I explained to my wife that I'm quite jealous of Charles having his mum around until she was 96 and when she died, she literally died in a castle, surrounded by her family and servants, whereas my mum died from cancer at 69 in my sister's house with minimal care because Covid had locked all the hospitals down.

Which is where I'm trying to come from if you're chatting with people today, there are going to be a whole host of opinions because everyone's life experiences are different, so tread carefully.

As for the change in monarch, we here at Bordersdown have know for some time what it's like to be ruled by a King Charles

I too appreciate that ordinary people may be genuinely upset and feel she did a great and selfless job, but surely the very recent episode of HRH actively protecting her paedophile son with many millions of pounds of public funds must have some small bearing on the collective memorialization of this person? The hagiography across every inch of the media is egregiously unwarranted and serves, at this time, as a massive distraction from much more important issues.

It really dose feel like the end of an era and as good a time as ever to dissolve the monarchy, it get a lot harder now to justify the money spent on adulterers, pedophiles, and fame hungry hangers on. Charles and Camilla just aren't as charismatic or marketable and really divide opinion even among royalists, The palaces would bring in just as much Tourism even if nobody lives their.

After a morning of carefully selected ballads to reflect the mood of her passing things have become increasingly stretched on Radio 2 though they did just play "Am I dreaming, or is this burning an Eternal Flame?"

So the BBC's impartiality on the matter can't be questioned

The 'tributes' by brands on social media are killing me. Domino's were practically first out of the gate

Surprised they didn't include that 'She loved the Mighty Meaty'.

So many were deleted within hours that "deleted" was trending though, which shows how insincere all that was - after it was clear that the predominant, prevailing opinion on Twitter seemed to be

ding dong the witch is dead and let's bully anyone who seems sad about it, because that means you approve of colonialism etc.
