Even non upgraded f16’s would put them on an even footing with su35’s etc, though I think it’s already been stated Ukraine wont get any f16’s with the new modern enhanced upgrade packs on them for risk of Russia & china getting their hands on the tech.

Russia says its a colossal risk to the west if they supply F16s.
Read between the lines: 'Please don't send F16s, we can't deal with them!'

Russian radar systems haven't been upgraded since the early 2000 at best. They'll probably see the f16 in the air but have no way of tracking any missile it fires.

Tracking radar-guided missile has been done since the invention of radar-guided missiles, RWR has been standard equipment of pretty much every combat aircraft since the '70s. Tracking IR missiles is a bit trickier but all recently produced aircrafts have use the President-S system, and a lot of older aircrafts have been retrofitted with one.
Cracking jokes about Russian capabilities is one thing, but remember they are still the second most powerful armed forces.

There’s a fascinating video on YouTube about the Russian aircraft carrier when it was in operation, it broke down (yet again) and was assisted by a US carrier that was about to be retired (one of the smaller ones), the US captain as a show of force to the Russian captain and sortied all 30 planes in one hit, all in perfect working order and without a hitch. The Russian carrier only had 4 planes on deck with 2 in repair, and only 1 actually combat ready ready to take off. The ace Russian pilot remarked to a US pilot “we are an absolute joke compared to the USA”.

Russia is really really good a sending young men off to die though.

In other news, looking at Ukraines deployments and recent movements, they are positioning themselves to encircle Bakhmut and cut the Russian forces off that have flooded into the city this past week, Russia has pulled basically all remaining reserves in to reinforce their positions.

Something is brewing from Ukraine and it’s not going to end well for Russian ground forces.

Ukraine have seemingly used the Winter to hold out, and ready themselves for a big push. With any luck this year they'll kick them out.

If they encircle Bakhmut they will likely wipe out Wagner as an effective fighting force. Ukraine has smartly used Bakhmut to keep Russia fixated on a single target while bleeding them of troops with as little loss themselves as possible while they re-arm and re-plan.

However they have been extremely good at keeping intelligence to themselves so whatever they are doing it will likely happen in and around Bakhmut, or the whole thing is a feign and they will launch an offensive well away from there somewhere unexpected.

Conflicting reports all the time from Bakhmut, Putin has congratulated Wagner on the complete capture of he city, while Ukraine have slowly pulled back in an orderly fashion while pushing more and more on the outskirts taking positions. So an encirclement seems imminent, I can only imagine Putin is happy for whatever regular troops he leaves inside the city to die.

A Russian in national paramilitary group thats been fighting in Ukraine against Russia has crossed the boarder and launched and attack on Belgorod, just saw the footage on sky news.

                            That’s bold.

I do like Sky News' reporting on Ukraine, Philp Ingram usually starts with an absolute peach of a line 'today is day xxx of Russia's ten day operation"
He's been doing it for ages, were are now up to over 450.
