I've already said as much (though i should of added "those depths for a long period of time"), its not a tragedy, this was the doing of an arrogant idiot skipping even the most basic safety implementations of dealing with dangerous hostile environments like extreme depths.

A debris field has been found near the Titanic wreck and experts are evaluating the area, US Coast Guard has announced it will hold a press conference about this at 15:00 local time (20:00 GMT) Makes me think they have found what remains of the sub will be informing the family's first and then the press, its not looking good.

Experts have raised concerns over the regulation of deep-sea vessels following the Titanic dive tragedy.

Sky News is reporting that it’s the “rear cover and landing frame”:

The leader of the search team which found the wreckage of the Titan gave a new update on the doomed rescue operation. The vessel imploded while making a journey to the wreck of the Titanic, killing all five people on board. Recap what happened in the latest news conference below.

Which I would have to say sound like pretty crucial bits.

Shame, sounds like they met a sad end.

There is something so gripping about stories like this. It reminds me of the film Ace In The Hole which is about a trapped miner and a newspaperman who turns him into a media sensation.

I've been offshore for over 20yrs , dealt with Subsea tools. divers etc..Not in a million years would that sub got offshore let alone get in the water. Madness

And I quote from The Verge

“ However, the submersible, which doesn’t have a GPS and receives directions over text messages from a support ship”

What, the, actual, expletive, expletive, expletive!!!!!!

Why would it need GPS though? *scratches head*

I think the comms options without a tether (itself a hazard) are very limited. Another good reason not to go down there in the first place.

It had no guidance, sonar, or nav system of any kind whatsoever. Now standard gps obviously isn’t going to work underwater, but it had nothing, at all.

I’m honestly surprised they found it at all. 200m away from the Titanic wreck. I’m guessing the implosion was the reason behind the loss of contact?

Can’t tell if serious or not.

The US Navy detected the implosion when it happened, passed on the info for the search but it's only being reported on now

That just shows how sensitive US navy equipment is if they could detect that all the way down there.

It probably helps that the US subs are built from steal and titanium. Rather than the carbon fibre one they bought from Smyths toy store.

A tragic loss of life and I feel sorry for their families, because people will still mourn their losses no matter how much money they have.

For me, it felt like this story was everywhere this week.
It's an interesting story and everyone hopes for a last minute rescue, but coverage was excessive.
Especially with the revelations of the safety corner-cutting and when you think about the recent capsize of the boat with migrants in in Greece last week.

The Greek shipwreck was a horrific tragedy. Yet it didn’t get the attention of the Titanic story
                                https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...-titanic-story

"While it’s only natural to be glued to the Titan story, it’s far from the only recent maritime tragedy in recent weeks. And yet it’s absorbing a disproportionate amount of the world’s attention, empathy and resources. Last Wednesday, one of the worst tragedies that has ever occurred on the Mediterranean Sea took place: a fishing boat carrying about 750 people, mainly Pakistani and Afghan migrants, capsized on its way to Italy.

There were 100 children below deck in that ship. One hundred children.

The exact number of fatalities is unclear: so far we know that 78 people have been confirmed dead and as many as 500 are missing. Those are heartbreaking numbers and yet hundreds of dead and missing migrants have failed to garner anywhere near the amount of attention from the US media as five rich adventurers."
