National and swing-state polling indicates a narrow race, with support for Trump remaining solid despite his change of Democratic rival
Message represents latest threat to use the office of the presidency to exact retribution if he wins second term
I'm 100% expecting a right wing media assault on Harris following the debate regardless of how it goes, it'll be seen as a focal point to try and repeat Biden's situation. Trump will talk sheer BS over the top of her and it'll be sold as her being weak.

Hahaha sounds great, I'll get the s'mores ready.
Yeah I really want to stay up and watch it and the live Daily Show analysis after (although not sure how I can get that tbh, I have a VPN but not sure if I also need a US cable provider account to watch live Comedy Central, and my closest friends in the US don't subscribe to cable)
The debate doesn't start till 2am GMT though and it's scheduled to run for 90 minutes so that might be a bit of a tough break on a work night.
The BBC broadcast the disastrous Biden debate in June live so assuming they will do the same again for this, though.

The right wing media assault is inevitable due to the insane partisanship of Fox. I mean these are the people who devoted days of wall-to-wall coverage over Obama saluting a military officer while holding a coffee cup. They'll always find something to moan about. I saw a clip where Fox anchor Jesse Watters was declaring a 'sombre, depressed mood, like a funeral' at the DNC while he was being shown side-by-side with live footage of a DJ dancing around at it while people cheered lol.
The debate itself is 'CNN rules', too, so he won't able to talk over her. They're the rules that were established for the Trump/Biden June debate at the insistence of the Biden camp, which mean that candidates take turns to answer questions, they cannot walk away from their podiums, and their mics are disabled when it is not their turn to answer.
In a reversal of June, the Harris campaign actually tried to soften these rules so that mics would not be disabled at any point, but the Trump campaign insisted that the same rules be preserved. I think that says a lot about the confidence level of both campaigns going into this.Last edited by wakka; 09-09-2024, 12:34.

I watched live last night (yeah kinda tired today... 🥱) and, just as the analysis is saying, it was a clear win for Harris. Trump's performance actually was pretty controlled by his standards. He'd clearly had it drummed into him that this was not a rally, do not treat this like a rally, and it almost worked - but Harris laid a killer blow about 20 minutes in, addressing the camera directly and asking viewers to attend a Trump rally to see for themselves how he rambled on about nonsense, while people left early due to how boring and incoherent it was.
Game over man, game over. It spun him out hard. His voice rose and he became agitated, squawking about having the biggest rallies, the best rallies, people haven't even seen rallies this good before (the best people had told him).
A question on abortion saw Trump try to justify his Roe takedown as a cure for an issue which had 'torn the country apart'. Harris's emotive retort detailing the hardships faced by victims of rape and incest had him staring straight ahead, refusing to meet her eye.
He repeatedly attempted to twist the conversation to the theoretically safer ground of immigration, repeating familiar material about 'migrant crime'.
But by then it was time to nuke the site from orbit, just to be sure. Harris used it as a segue to remind viewers that the only criminal in the vicinity was him - before moving onto an Apprentice-adjacent taunt that he'd been 'fired by 81 million people' that clearly stung.
A flustered, sweaty Trump emerged for an impromptu press conference in the spin room, but didn't even have a proper mic. He may have been vaguely aware that he'd made claims, refuted immediately by moderators, that babies were being executed post-birth and Haitian asylum seekers were eating people's pets. It wasn't looking good. It should, by rights, leave undecideds feeling just one way.
