It's pretty cool. Its full name is the Madison Square Garden Sphere.

They are meant to be building a second in Stratford in London but it's been highly controversial and there's been a lot of campaigning against it so I'm not sure if it will go ahead.

Twitter threatens to sue Meta over rival Threads app | Twitter | The Guardian
Twitter claims Meta has misappropriated trade secrets and IP from them. They claim that Meta has poached Twitter staff in the last year who would have knowledge of the inner workings of Twitter. Musk says it's fine for Meta to compete but they are effectively cheating.

Meta has responded saying no Twitter engineers have worked on Threads.

Feels like Musk is bruising from Threads gaining 30m subscribers in 24hrs and unable to grasp that it isn't poaching if you fire nearly all your staff and they logically look for similar work at somewhere that's hiring...

They don't want to go down this road. Twitter was, at its core, a reimplementation of a bunch of FB's stuff way back when. It's the reason why Tweets have /status/ at the end of their URL; Twitter is kinda like a social network where the only thing you can post are status updates.

That was the original reason I never signed up, Facebook with 99% of the functionality removed never felt a compelling concept to me. Despite its success it still doesn't.

In many cases, people like it because Twitter is a social network that doesn't require your real identity, like FB does.

For some people, that, immediately, sells you on the concept, but if it doesn't, then you're wise to stay away.

Yep, that to me just adds to the sense of less credibility to the platform - which is only worse now

I signed the business up to Threads yesterday more to secure the user name than anything else, looking at it I can’t really see why it won’t just turn in to exactly the same **** as Twitter though? Do I really need to add it to my morning business social media routine? Doubtful.

                  This exactly.

Twitter needs to be replaced by something else. But the thought of giving Meta yet another way to compound its tracking of everyone doesn’t feel so good to me. My trust in them is zero.

Edit: seemingly their own trust in themselves is zero given they won’t yet launch in Europe because they can’t do it without falling foul of privacy laws.

That's the thing, to me, it makes it more credible. It's just to do with how you see things.

I wouldn't trust a single thing posted on Twitter as being accurate or true.

That's only a problem if you treat it as a source of real-world news, which I don't. Part of the problem is that some people do.

Yes, sadly many journalists seem to fall into that latter group, highlighted by them complaining when Twitter restricted the number of posts that could be read in a day :/

I'm no fan of Meta either, but with Threads it's just refreshing not to have all the Musk drama - Musk has no one to blame but himself for Meta being able to pull the rug from under his feet.

So, 48hrs into its life and the count is Threads @ 70m users vs Twitter @ 250m users

this is the view of the thing driving up to it, it looks cool but surely a hazard for anyone driving in the area as its massively distracting.

That is hilarious. I feel a campaign for an open mouthed Pac-Man head is begging to happen
