Not seen a major news site repeat it but there's noise going around that Biden may bow out by the end of play on Sunday. Odds of us ending up with a darkest timeline America is rocketing up

Year definitely no smoke without fire on this one, given how completely away with the fairies he is he couldn’t possibly last 4 more years in that job.

Repeated rumours of Michelle Obama stepping in.

The story today is that Biden is 'soul searching', according to 'sources familiar with the matter'. If that's what his camp are putting out to the press, that to me says this is a done deal and he's stepping down.

I've been torn on Biden stepping down, but I actually now disagree with this. I think this is the best strategy for the Dems at this point and gives the best chance of winning. It's not only because Biden's campaign is irreparably damaged, but that Trump's campaign is calibrated entirely around Biden as an opponent. By changing the nominee I think they will significantly disrupt Republican campaign strategy and I think that could be very advantageous.

Michelle Obama would be an absolute dream but being realistic I think it's a fantasy. Harris is most likely but I do worry about her viability to win. There are some solid options among Dem governors but all have a relative lack of name recognition.

It's queasily nail biting but for me, it's a thumbs up to Biden finally stepping down.

Michelle Obama smashes it in the polls. Hillary Clinton polls better than Harris too.

In the swing states that matter, Harris is well behind Trump and polls worse than Biden.

          It IS the dark timeline.

If it happens they will have very little time to basically make a history making first, it's a move that has always cemented election failure previously so they need the safest bet on the table rather than getting tied up in preferences and what ifs which I'm not sure they will accomplish. I can't imagine Hillary will be in the mix and despite the fuss made about her Michelle Obama will never enter that contest so they really need to do everything they can to prop up Kamala and ensure that she demolishes Trump at every step.

We're at the point where if Jesus came back and stood for the Democrats, many Republicans would still vote Trump as he's an honest, moralistic and business-minded man.

I feel like we're damned if we do and damned if we don't with Biden stepping down.
They should have been working on his replacement (not his hip), however here we are, so who could step up at this point?
If Biden stays - it's a weakened party and loss is likely.

People joke but this would genuinely be in the bank if they got Tom Hanks to stand

They will have to. The DNC is in late August and the nominee will be locked in then. It's not possible to dither beyond that point.

For both parties, there are many voters who are 'lost causes', in unwinnable states where the result is already a lock. Massachusetts will never vote R. Wyoming will never vote D. The reality of US presidential elections is that the current deep divide in the country means that they are now fought among a small group of floating voters in half a dozen swing states. It's the minority of persuadables in Arizona, Michigan, Georgia etc who will decide this contest. Those are the people that Trump and whoever the Dems nominate are really fighting over.

Sure, the situation for the Dems is much, much less than ideal. But a choice between these two has to be made. And I don't think they are necessarily equal. At this point I think the right one, with the best chance of a win, is for Biden to go.

Another report, from NBC, says that Biden's family are now planning an exit strategy for him. Biden's Aides still dispute any notion of him stepping down but they're quickly becoming the only voice in the room saying it which means even if it were true his campaign is over before he's even been locked in as nominee

I don't like the idea but I feel they just have to do it now. The Democrats are eating themselves at the moment. If they don't move on from this as close to immediately as possible, they won't be able to start building a new campaign. There is no saving the situation with Biden now.

It's a battle to see which candidate is the least demented.
