Yeah the way they have cut this is not perfect but a non means tested free cash handout to everyone over the age of 65 is really wasteful.

It makes much more sense to automatically give this to people on pension credits which is what happens under the new system. So those poor freezing pensioners still get the handout. it just means that Mr Jag half a million pound property and three holidays a year dosent.

Well, I wouldn’t completely disagree if there was a perfect system which automatically “switched off” heating allowances for wealthy pensioners who didn’t need it to survive. However, there isn’t. You have to recognise there are cash-poor pensioners who still can’t claim pension credit as they go over the cut-off figure, and they will suffer.
There are also pensioners who won’t claim pension credit because they don’t have the support to do so, and also because it’s so damn stressful. It’s not unknown for old dears to keel over and die during the stress of claiming pension credit (and Attendant’s Allowance and so on). These aren’t pleasant processed to go through.

(Also, call me an old-fashioned social democrat, but I would like to keep the welfare state as universal as possible. For example, I wouldn’t want the NHS to be turned into a means-tested service for the extremely poor and whomever the system deems to be completely uninsurable.)
