It definitely needs a complete overhaul, and in a way that holds companies in particular to better account, but when these calls come through they are often very ideology led and dropping a simplistic tax would realistically affect a very small number of people. It would also negatively affect business in the UK and any additional costs would just get slapped onto consumers anyway. I think this is why the heavier left of Labour have been so frustrated in Starmer's leadership but he's got the completely right idea that it's a long road you have to build towards, that a heavy handed approach will cause terminal losses of voter support and you can't do anything if you're never in power. A full tax system overhaul is the key but Labour are still a very long way from having public support to be trusted to do it. When it comes to simply taxing the mega-rich more, I think the hard left of Labour grossly overestimates the public support for it.
