Yeah; allowing people to choose them "if they want" is a waste of time. The political class don't get it; if you're on a low wage in a so-called 'unskilled' job, and your employer asks you to go on a zero-hour contract, that's tantamount to being told you're going on one. Refuse? Sack. Want another job nearby? Bad references. Want another job somewhere else? Internet, so bad references follow you. Unfair dismissal? As if you can wrangle that for a they-said-you-said technicality for a shelf-stacker at Tesco.
Pathetic.

I might be missing something in the original proposals but if not, to play devils advocate, it seems like... the right move?
There's undoubtedly exploitation of zero hour contracts that needs to be addressed but the trouble with an outright ban of such contracts is that there are casual roles that have to be contracted on a zero hour basis so out of sheet technicality there can't be an outright ban, no?

Zero hour, short, part time contracts suit some people, especially if they have kids and they just want casual part time work, it can work sensibly in plenty of situations.
Of course you’re going to have inevitable abuse with large corps that are only interested in quarterly reports and shaving every visible penny.
As usual with humans there’s no easy answer and 1 size doesn’t fit all with work and hours.

Work on zero hours and you will have no income when your employer gives you, get this, zero hours work that week. But you are still contracted to work exclusively for that company, and can’t claim unemployment benefits for that lull week/month/season because you’re technically still employed. Zero hours impoverishes and starves people. It is evil, and so is anyone defending it.

I've given plenty of references to UK based companies who've asked negative based questions.
Giving a bad reference without due cause is outright scummy but if an employee trully was a twat even after chances of reform, it should be pointed out in the reference as it will only reflect poorly on the employer giving the reference.
EDIT: Oops, just realised I quoted the wrong post. Sorry.
