Well I survived my Japanese restaurant trip and, actually, it was really good. Went for the Gyuniku Yaki Soba and it was excellent. A huge portion so there was no way I was going to eat it all and it was really tasty. The sauce on the noodles was really nice and the meat and vegetables were good. I'd go for that again and, actually, would be tempted to try more.
And I had a few bottles of Asahi Super Dry, which is a good beer.
But for dessert... sticky toffee pudding? Banofee pie? Surely not traditional Japanese desserts?

Glad you had a good time, ASD is fantastic if it's the real stuff (imported as opposed to brewed under licence), much prefer it to Sapporo & Kirin, but it's all down to personal taste.

Yebisu > all other Japanese beer, except for the Suntory Aki Nama of 2006 which was the best beer I've ever had from a can. I'm pretty sure it was 2006...

Thread bump.
Chances of a late September/early October vacation are low, company is closed for three weeks during August and those already stretch my vacation periods way too much.
So, how's Japan in August? I know it will be hot, but what about shops, restaurants and so on? I'm planning for the 6th to the 17th of August but if everything's closed and/or unbearably hot, I wouldn't bother and skip to the next year ( ;__; ).

I was thinking about visiting Osaka, Tokushima shouldn't be too hard to reach from there; it would detract few days from Tokyo, but I would have spent my time there between arcades and videogame shops...The Awa Odori looks much more meaningful
I was also considering Sapporo for a somewhat colder weather, but you sound like that days are not that hot as one would think.
Definitely not going there for beaches, I'm more or a mountain/city guy.

Sorry I was joking a bit re the weather, it should be still 30 degrees (C not F!) it just that the locals think it's getting chilly so the beaches start to close.
The bus trip from Osaka to Tokushima is a nice one, you go via Kobe and will go right past Kobe Tower;
Then over the longest suspension bridge in the world;
Plus, on the Tokushima side another suspension bridge is the site of one of the worlds largest naturally occurring whirlpools;
